A Poetical EssayA
-
Hail wond'rous Being who in pow'r supremeB
Exists from everlasting whose great nameC
Deep in the human heart and every atomD
The Air the Earth or azure Main containsE
In undecipher'd characters is wroteF
Incomprehensible O what can wordsG
The weak interpreters of mortal thoughtsH
Or what can thoughts tho' wild of wing they roveI
Thro' the vast concave of th'aetherial roundJ
If to the heav'n of heav'ns they'd win their wayA
Advent'rous like the birds of night they're lostK
And delug'd in the flood of dazzling dayA
-
May then the youthful uninspired BardL
Presume to hymn th'Eternal may he soarM
Where Seraph and where Cherubin on highN
Resound th'unceasing plaudits and with themO
In the grand Chorus mix his feeble voiceP
-
He may if Thou Who from the witless babeQ
Ordainest honor glory strength and praiseR
Uplift th'unpinion'd Muse and deign t'assistS
Great Poet of the Universe his songT
-
Before this earthly planet wound her courseU
Round Light's perennial fountain before LightV
Herself 'gan shine and at th'inspiring wordW
Shot to existence in a blaze of dayA
Before the Morning Stars together sangX
And hail'd Thee Architect of countless worldsY
Thou art all glorious all beneficentZ
All Wisdom and Omnipotence thou artA2
-
But is the era of Creation fix'dB2
At when these worlds began Could ought retardL
Goodness that knows no bounds from blessing everC2
Or keep th'immense Artificer in slothD2
Avaunt the dust directed crawling thoughtE2
That Puissance immeasurably vastF2
And Bounty inconceivable could restG2
Content exhausted with one week of actionH2
No in th'exertion of Thy righteous pow'rI2
Ten thousand times more active than the SunH2
Thou reign'd and with a mighty hand compos'dJ2
Systems innumerable matchless allK2
All stampt with Thine uncounterfeited sealL2
But yet if still to more stupendous heightsM2
The Muse unblam'd her aching sense may strainN2
Perhaps wrapt up in contemplation deepO2
The best of Beings on the noblest themeB
Might ruminate at leisure Scope immenseP2
Th'eternal Pow'r and Godhead to exploreM
And with Itself th'omniscient mind repleteQ2
This were enough to fill the boundless AllK2
This were a Sabbath worthy the SupremeB
Perhaps enthron'd amidst a choicer fewR2
Of Sp'rits inferior He might greatly planS2
The two prime Pillars of the UniverseT2
Creation and Redemption and a whileU2
Pause with the grand presentiments of gloryV2
-
Perhaps but all's conjecture here belowW2
All ignorance and self plum'd vanityV2
O Thou Whose ways to wonder at's distrustX2
Whom to describe's presumption all we canS2
And all we may be glorifi'd be prais'dY2
-
A Day shall come when all this Earth shall perishZ2
Nor leave behind ev'n Chaos it shall comeD
When all the armies of the elementsA3
Shall war against themselves and mutual rageB3
To make Perdition triumph it shall comeD
When the capacious atmosphere aboveC3
Shall in sulphureous thunders groan and dieN
And vanish into void the earth beneathD3
Shall sever to the center and devourC2
Th'enormous blaze of the destructive flamesE3
Ye rocks that mock the raving of the floodsF3
And proudly frown upon th'impatient deepO2
Where is your grandeur now Ye foaming wavesG3
That all along th'immense Atlantic roarM
In vain ye swell will a few drops sufficeH3
To quench the inextinguishable fireC2
Ye mountains on whose cloud crown'd tops the cedarsI3
Are lessen'd into shrubs magnific pilesJ3
That prop the painted chambers of the heav'nsJ3
And fix the earth continual Athos whereK3
Where Tenerif's thy stateliness to dayA
What Aetna are thy flames to these No moreM
Than the poor glow worm to the golden SunH2
-
Nor shall the verdant valleys then remainN2
Safe in their meek submission they the debtL3
Of nature and of justice too must payA
Yet I must weep for you ye rival fairK3
Arno and Andalusia but for theeV2
More largely and with filial tears must weepO2
O Albion O my country thou must joinM3
In vain dissever'd from the rest must joinM3
The terrors of th'inevitable ruinH2
-
Nor thou illustrious monarch of the dayA
Nor thou fair queen of night nor you ye starsJ3
Tho' million leagues and million still remoteF
Shall yet survive that day ye must submitN3
Sharers not bright spectators of the sceneO3
-
But tho' the Earth shall to the center perishZ2
Nor leave behind ev'n Chaos tho' the airK3
With all the elements must pass awayA
Vain as an idiot's dream tho' the huge rocksJ3
That brandish the tall cedars on their topsJ3
With humbler vales must to perdition yieldP3
Tho' the gilt Sun and silver tressed MoonQ3
With all her bright retinue must be lostK
Yet Thou Great Father of the world surviv'stK
Eternal as Thou wert yet still survivesJ3
The soul of man immortal perfect nowR3
And candidate for unexpiring joysJ3
-
He comes He comes the awful trump I hearS3
The flaming sword's intolerable blazeJ3
I see He comes th'Archangel from aboveC3
Arise ye tenants of the silent graveT3
Awake incorruptible and ariseJ3
From east to west from the antarctic poleU3
To regions hyperborean all ye sonsJ3
Ye sons of Adam and ye heirs of Heav'nR3
Arise you tenants of the silent graveT3
Awake incorruptible and ariseJ3
-
'Tis then nor sooner that the restless mindK
Shall find itself at home and like the ArkV3
Fix'd on the mountain top shall look aloftK
O'er the vague passage of precarious lifeW3
And winds and waves and rocks and tempests pastK
Enjoy the everlasting calm of Heav'nR3
'Tis then nor sooner that the deathless soulU3
Shall justly know its nature and its riseJ3
'Tis then the human tongue new tun'd shall giveX3
Praises more worthy the eternal earS3
Yet what we can we ought and therefore ThouR3
Purge Thou my heart Omnipotent and GoodK
Purge thou my heart with hyssop lest like CainR3
I offer fruitless sacrifice with giftsJ3
Offend and not propitiate the Ador'dK
Tho' gratitude were bless'd with all the pow'rsJ3
Her bursting heart could long for tho' the swiftK
The fiery wing'd imagination soar'dK
Beyond ambition's wish yet all were vainR3
To speak Him as He is Who is IneffableY3
Yet still let reason thro' the eye of faithZ3
View Him with fearful love let truth pronounceJ3
And adoration on her bended kneeR3
With Heav'n directed hands confess His reignR3
And let th'Angelic Archangelic bandK
With all the Hosts of Heav'n Cherubic formsJ3
And forms Seraphic witha their silver trumpsJ3
And golden lyres attend For Thou art holyR3
For Thou art One th'Eternal Who aloneR3
Exerts all goodness and transcends all praiseJ3
