A Poetical Essay	A
	-
Hail wond'rous Being who in pow'r supreme	B
Exists from everlasting whose great name	C
Deep in the human heart and every atom	D
The Air the Earth or azure Main contains	E
In undecipher'd characters is wrote	F
Incomprehensible O what can words	G
The weak interpreters of mortal thoughts	H
Or what can thoughts tho' wild of wing they rove	I
Thro' the vast concave of th'aetherial round	J
If to the heav'n of heav'ns they'd win their way	A
Advent'rous like the birds of night they're lost	K
And delug'd in the flood of dazzling day	A
	-
May then the youthful uninspired Bard	L
Presume to hymn th'Eternal may he soar	M
Where Seraph and where Cherubin on high	N
Resound th'unceasing plaudits and with them	O
In the grand Chorus mix his feeble voice	P
	-
He may if Thou Who from the witless babe	Q
Ordainest honor glory strength and praise	R
Uplift th'unpinion'd Muse and deign t'assist	S
Great Poet of the Universe his song	T

Before this earthly planet wound her course	U
Round Light's perennial fountain before Light	V
Herself 'gan shine and at th'inspiring word	W
Shot to existence in a blaze of day	A
Before the Morning Stars together sang	X
And hail'd Thee Architect of countless worlds	Y
Thou art all glorious all beneficent	Z
All Wisdom and Omnipotence thou art	A2

But is the era of Creation fix'd	B2
At when these worlds began Could ought retard	L
Goodness that knows no bounds from blessing ever	C2
Or keep th'immense Artificer in sloth	D2
Avaunt the dust directed crawling thought	E2
That Puissance immeasurably vast	F2
And Bounty inconceivable could rest	G2
Content exhausted with one week of action	H2
No in th'exertion of Thy righteous pow'r	I2
Ten thousand times more active than the Sun	H2
Thou reign'd and with a mighty hand compos'd	J2
Systems innumerable matchless all	K2
All stampt with Thine uncounterfeited seal	L2
But yet if still to more stupendous heights	M2
The Muse unblam'd her aching sense may strain	N2
Perhaps wrapt up in contemplation deep	O2
The best of Beings on the noblest theme	B
Might ruminate at leisure Scope immense	P2
Th'eternal Pow'r and Godhead to explore	M
And with Itself th'omniscient mind replete	Q2
This were enough to fill the boundless All	K2
This were a Sabbath worthy the Supreme	B
Perhaps enthron'd amidst a choicer few	R2
Of Sp'rits inferior He might greatly plan	S2
The two prime Pillars of the Universe	T2
Creation and Redemption and a while	U2
Pause with the grand presentiments of glory	V2

Perhaps but all's conjecture here below	W2
All ignorance and self plum'd vanity	V2
O Thou Whose ways to wonder at's distrust	X2
Whom to describe's presumption all we can	S2
And all we may be glorifi'd be prais'd	Y2

A Day shall come when all this Earth shall perish	Z2
Nor leave behind ev'n Chaos it shall come	D
When all the armies of the elements	A3
Shall war against themselves and mutual rage	B3
To make Perdition triumph it shall come	D
When the capacious atmosphere above	C3
Shall in sulphureous thunders groan and die	N
And vanish into void the earth beneath	D3
Shall sever to the center and devour	C2
Th'enormous blaze of the destructive flames	E3
Ye rocks that mock the raving of the floods	F3
And proudly frown upon th'impatient deep	O2
Where is your grandeur now Ye foaming waves	G3
That all along th'immense Atlantic roar	M
In vain ye swell will a few drops suffice	H3
To quench the inextinguishable fire	C2
Ye mountains on whose cloud crown'd tops the cedars	I3
Are lessen'd into shrubs magnific piles	J3
That prop the painted chambers of the heav'ns	J3
And fix the earth continual Athos where	K3
Where Tenerif's thy stateliness to day	A
What Aetna are thy flames to these No more	M
Than the poor glow worm to the golden Sun	H2

Nor shall the verdant valleys then remain	N2
Safe in their meek submission they the debt	L3
Of nature and of justice too must pay	A
Yet I must weep for you ye rival fair	K3
Arno and Andalusia but for thee	V2
More largely and with filial tears must weep	O2
O Albion O my country thou must join	M3
In vain dissever'd from the rest must join	M3
The terrors of th'inevitable ruin	H2

Nor thou illustrious monarch of the day	A
Nor thou fair queen of night nor you ye stars	J3
Tho' million leagues and million still remote	F
Shall yet survive that day ye must submit	N3
Sharers not bright spectators of the scene	O3

But tho' the Earth shall to the center perish	Z2
Nor leave behind ev'n Chaos tho' the air	K3
With all the elements must pass away	A
Vain as an idiot's dream tho' the huge rocks	J3
That brandish the tall cedars on their tops	J3
With humbler vales must to perdition yield	P3
Tho' the gilt Sun and silver tressed Moon	Q3
With all her bright retinue must be lost	K
Yet Thou Great Father of the world surviv'st	K
Eternal as Thou wert yet still survives	J3
The soul of man immortal perfect now	R3
And candidate for unexpiring joys	J3

The flaming sword's intolerable blaze	J3
I see He comes th'Archangel from above	C3
Arise ye tenants of the silent grave	T3
Awake incorruptible and arise	J3
From east to west from the antarctic pole	U3
To regions hyperborean all ye sons	J3
Ye sons of Adam and ye heirs of Heav'n	R3

Shall find itself at home and like the Ark	V3
Fix'd on the mountain top shall look aloft	K
O'er the vague passage of precarious life	W3
And winds and waves and rocks and tempests past	K
Enjoy the everlasting calm of Heav'n	R3
'Tis then nor sooner that the deathless soul	U3
Shall justly know its nature and its rise	J3
'Tis then the human tongue new tun'd shall give	X3
Praises more worthy the eternal ear	S3
Yet what we can we ought and therefore Thou	R3
Purge Thou my heart Omnipotent and Good	K
Purge thou my heart with hyssop lest like Cain	R3
I offer fruitless sacrifice with gifts	J3
Offend and not propitiate the Ador'd	K
Tho' gratitude were bless'd with all the pow'rs	J3
Her bursting heart could long for tho' the swift	K
The fiery wing'd imagination soar'd	K
Beyond ambition's wish yet all were vain	R3
To speak Him as He is Who is Ineffable	Y3
Yet still let reason thro' the eye of faith	Z3
View Him with fearful love let truth pronounce	J3
And adoration on her bended knee	R3
With Heav'n directed hands confess His reign	R3
And let th'Angelic Archangelic band	K
With all the Hosts of Heav'n Cherubic forms	J3
And forms Seraphic witha their silver trumps	J3
And golden lyres attend For Thou art holy	R3
For Thou art One th'Eternal Who alone	R3
Exerts all goodness and transcends all praise	J3
