A Hymn for ChildrenA
-
The man of Mercy says the SeerB
Shows mercy to his beastC
Learn not of churls to be severeD
But house and feed at leastC
-
Shall I melodious pris'ners takeE
From out the linnet's nestF
And not keep busy care awakeE
To cherish ev'ry guestF
-
What shall I whip in cruel wrathG
The steed that bears me safeH
Or 'gainst the dog who plights his trothI
For faithful service chafeH
-
In the deep waters throw thy breadJ
Which thou shalt find againK
With God's good interest on thy headJ
And pleasure for thy painL
-
Let thine industrious silk worms reapM
Their wages to the fullN
Nor let neglected dormice sleepM
To death within thy woolN
-
Know when the frosty weather comesO
'Tis charity to dealP
To wren and redbreast all thy crumbsO
The remnant of thy mealP
-
Tho' these some spirits think but lightQ
And deem indifferent thingsR
Yet they are serious in the sightQ
OF CHRIST the King of KingsR
