Sound the deep watersA
Who shall sound that deepB
Too short the plummetC
And the watchmen sleepB
Some dream of effortD
Up a toilsome steepB
Some dream of pasture groundsE
For harmless sheepB
-
White shapes flit to and froF
From mast to mastG
They feel the distant tempestH
That nears them fastG
Great rocks are straight aheadI
Great shoals not pastG
They shout to one anotherJ
Upon the blastG
-
O soft the streams drop musicK
Between the hillsL
And musical the birds' nestsM
Beside those rillsM
The nests are types of homeN
Love hidden from illsM
The nests are types of spiritsM
Love music fillsM
-
So dream the sleepersM
Each man in his placeM
The lightning shows the smileO
Upon each faceM
The ship is driving drivingP
It drives apaceM
And sleepers smile and spiritsM
Bewail their caseM
-
The lightning glares and reddensM
Across the skiesM
It seems but sunsetQ
To those sleeping eyesM
When did the sun go downR
On such a wiseM
From such a sunsetQ
When shall day ariseM
-
Wake call the spiritsM
But to heedless earsM
They have forgotten sorrowsM
And hopes and fearsM
They have forgotten perilsM
And smiles and tearsM
Their dream has held them longS
Long years and yearsM
-
Wake call the spirits againT
But it would takeU
A louder summonsM
To bid them awakeU
Some dream of pleasureJ
For another's sakeU
Some dream forgetfulV
Of a lifelong acheU
-
One by one slowlyW
Ah how sad and slowF
Wailing and prayingP
The spirits rise and goF
Clear stainless spiritsM
White as white as snowF
Pale spirits wailingP
For an overthrowF
-
One by one flittingP
Like a mournful birdX
Whose song is tired at lastG
For no mate heardX
The loving voice is silentY
The useless wordX
One by one flittingP
Sick with hope deferredX
-
Driving and drivingP
The ship drives amainF
While swift from mast to mastG
Shapes flit againF
Flit silent as the silenceM
Where men lie slainF
Their shadow cast upon the sailsM
Is like a stainF
-
No voice to call the sleepersM
No hand to raiseM
They sleep to death in dreamingP
Of length of daysM
Vanity of vanitiesM
The Preacher saysM
Vanity is the endZ
Of all their waysM
