To Charles Lloyd: An Unexpected Visitor Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGHI JKLK MNON PQRQ STUV LWXW

Alone obscure without a friendA
A cheerless solitary thingB
Why seeks my Lloyd the stranger outC
What offering can the stranger bringB
-
-
Of social scenes home bred delightsD
That him in aught compensate mayE
For Stowey's pleasant winter nightsD
For loves and friendships far awayE
-
-
In brief oblivion to foregoF
Friends such as thine so justly dearG
And be awhile with me contentH
To stay a kindly loiterer hereI
-
-
For this a gleam of random joyJ
Hath flush'd my unaccustom'd cheekK
And with an o'er charg'd bursting heartL
I feel the thanks I cannot speakK
-
-
Oh sweet are all the Muses' laysM
And sweet the charm of matin birdN
'Twas long since these estranged earsO
The sweeter voice of friend had heardN
-
-
The voice hath spoke the pleasant soundsP
In memory's ear in after timeQ
Shall live to sometimes rouse a tearR
And sometimes prompt an honest rhymeQ
-
-
For when the transient charm is fledS
And when the little week is o'erT
To cheerless friendless solitudeU
When I return as heretoforeV
-
-
Long long within my aching heartL
The grateful sense shall cherish'd beW
I'll think less meanly of myselfX
That Lloyd will sometimes think on meW
