A
Pomposo insolent and loudB
Vain idol of a scribbling crowdB
Whose very name inspires an aweC
Whose ev'ry word is sense and lawD
For what his greatness hath decreedE
Like laws of Persia and of MedeE
Sacred thro' all the realm of witE
Must never of repeal admitE
Who cursing flatt'ry is the toolF
Of ev'ry fawning flatt'ring foolF
Who wit with jealous eye surveysG
And sickens at another's praiseG
Who proudly seiz'd of learning's throneH
Now damns all learning but his ownH
Who scorns those common wares to trade inI
Reas'ning convincing and persuadingJ
But makes each sentence current passK
With Puppy Coxcomb Scoundrel AssK
For 'tis with him a certain ruleF
The folly's prov'd when he calls foolF
Who to increase his native strengthL
Draws words six syllables in lengthL
With which assisted with a frownM
By way of club he knocks us downM
Who 'bove the vulgar dares to riseN
And sense of decency defiesN
For this same decency is madeE
Only for bunglers in the tradeE
And like the cobweb laws is stillO
Broke thro' by great ones when they willO
Pomposo with strong sense suppliedE
Supported and confirm'd by prideE
His comrades' terrors to beguileP
Grinn'd horribly a ghastly smileP
Features so horrid were it lightE
Would put the Devil himself to flightE
