Femmes Damnées Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCCCDCCCEFECCGCG CGCGHIHI

Like pensive cattle lying on the sandsA
they turn their eyes towards the sea s far hillsB
and feet searching each other s touching handsA
know sweet languor and the bitterest thrillsB
Some where the stream babbles deep in the woodsC
their hearts enamoured of long intimaciesC
go spelling out the loves of their own girlhoodsC
and carving the green bark of young treesC
Others like Sisters walk gravely and slowD
among the rocks full of apparitionsC
where Saint Anthony saw like lava flowsC
the bared crimson breasts of his temptationsC
There are those in the melting candle s glimmerE
who in mute hollows of caves still paganF
call on you to relieve their groaning feverE
O Bacchus to soothe the remorse of the ancientsC
And others whose throats love scapulariesC
who hiding whips under their long vestmentG
in the sombre groves of the night solitariesC
blend the sweats of joy with the tears of tormentG
O virgins o demons o monsters o martyrsC
great spirits despisers of realityG
now full of cries now full of tearsC
pious and lustful seeking infinityG
you whom my soul has pursued to your hellH
poor sisters I adore you as much as I weepI
for your dismal sufferings thirsts that swellH
and the vessels of love where your great hearts steepI
