Twenty Years Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDCCD EFEEF GHGGH IBIIB JKJJKBeg your pardon old fellow I think | A |
I was dreaming just now when you spoke | B |
The fact is the musical clink | A |
Of the ice on your wine goblet's brink | A |
A chord of my memory woke | B |
- | |
And I stood in the pasture field where | C |
Twenty summers ago I had stood | D |
And I heard in that sound I declare | C |
The clinking of bells in the air | C |
Of the cows coming home from the wood | D |
- | |
Then the apple bloom shook on the hill | E |
And the mullein stalks tilted each lance | F |
And the sun behind Rapalye's mill | E |
Was my uttermost West and could thrill | E |
Like some fanciful land of romance | F |
- | |
Then my friend was a hero and then | G |
My girl was an angel In fine | H |
I drank buttermilk for at ten | G |
Faith asks less to aid her than when | G |
At thirty we doubt over wine | H |
- | |
Ah well it DOES seem that I must | I |
Have been dreaming just now when you spoke | B |
Or lost very like in the dust | I |
Of the years that slow fashioned the crust | I |
On that bottle whose seal you last broke | B |
- | |
Twenty years was its age did you say | J |
Twenty years Ah my friend it is true | K |
All the dreams that have flown since that day | J |
All the hopes in that time passed away | J |
Old friend I've been drinking with you | K |
