Twenty Years Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDCCD EFEEF GHGGH IBIIB JKJJK

Beg your pardon old fellow I thinkA
I was dreaming just now when you spokeB
The fact is the musical clinkA
Of the ice on your wine goblet's brinkA
A chord of my memory wokeB
-
And I stood in the pasture field whereC
Twenty summers ago I had stoodD
And I heard in that sound I declareC
The clinking of bells in the airC
Of the cows coming home from the woodD
-
Then the apple bloom shook on the hillE
And the mullein stalks tilted each lanceF
And the sun behind Rapalye's millE
Was my uttermost West and could thrillE
Like some fanciful land of romanceF
-
Then my friend was a hero and thenG
My girl was an angel In fineH
I drank buttermilk for at tenG
Faith asks less to aid her than whenG
At thirty we doubt over wineH
-
Ah well it DOES seem that I mustI
Have been dreaming just now when you spokeB
Or lost very like in the dustI
Of the years that slow fashioned the crustI
On that bottle whose seal you last brokeB
-
Twenty years was its age did you sayJ
Twenty years Ah my friend it is trueK
All the dreams that have flown since that dayJ
All the hopes in that time passed awayJ
Old friend I've been drinking with youK
