The Reveille Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBBBB DBEBBBB DBFBBBB GBBBBBB HBHBBBB

Hark I hear the tramp of thousandsA
And of armed men the humB
Lo a nation's hosts have gatheredC
Round the quick alarming drumB
Saying ComeB
Freemen comeB
Ere your heritage be wasted said the quick alarming drumB
-
Let me of my heart take counselD
War is not of life the sumB
Who shall stay and reap the harvestE
When the autumn days shall comeB
But the drumB
Echoed ComeB
Death shall reap the braver harvest said the solemn sounding drumB
-
But when won the coming battleD
What of profit springs therefromB
What if conquest subjugationF
Even greater ills becomeB
But the drumB
Answered ComeB
You must do the sum to prove it said the Yankee answering drumB
-
What if 'mid the cannons' thunderG
Whistling shot and bursting bombB
When my brothers fall around meB
Should my heart grow cold and numbB
But the drumB
Answered ComeB
Better there in death united than in life a recreant ComeB
-
Thus they answered hoping fearingH
Some in faith and doubting someB
Till a trumpet voice proclaimingH
Said My chosen people comeB
Then the drumB
Lo was dumbB
For the great heart of the nation throbbing answered Lord we comeB
