The Aged Stranger Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BACA BADA EAFA GAHA IJFA HAKA GAEA LAMA

An Incident Of The WarA
-
-
I was with Grant the stranger saidB
Said the farmer Say no moreA
But rest thee here at my cottage porchC
For thy feet are weary and soreA
-
I was with Grant the stranger saidB
Said the farmer Nay no moreA
I prithee sit at my frugal boardD
And eat of my humble storeA
-
How fares my boy my soldier boyE
Of the old Ninth Army CorpsA
I warrant he bore him gallantlyF
In the smoke and the battle's roarA
-
I know him not said the aged manG
And as I remarked beforeA
I was with Grant Nay nay I knowH
Said the farmer say no moreA
-
He fell in battle I see alasI
Thou'dst smooth these tidings o'erJ
Nay speak the truth whatever it beF
Though it rend my bosom's coreA
-
How fell he With his face to the foeH
Upholding the flag he boreA
Oh say not that my boy disgracedK
The uniform that he woreA
-
I cannot tell said the aged manG
And should have remarked beforeA
That I was with Grant in IllinoisE
Some three years before the warA
-
Then the farmer spake him never a wordL
But beat with his fist full soreA
That aged man who had worked for GrantM
Some three years before the warA
