North Beach Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCCBCBB DEDEDEEE EEEEEEEEEAfter Spenser | A |
- | |
- | |
Lo where the castle of bold Pfeiffer throws | B |
Its sullen shadow on the rolling tide | C |
No more the home where joy and wealth repose | B |
But now where wassailers in cells abide | C |
See yon long quay that stretches far and wide | C |
Well known to citizens as wharf of Meiggs | B |
There each sweet Sabbath walks in maiden pride | C |
The pensive Margaret and brave Pat whose legs | B |
Encased in broadcloth oft keep time with Peg's | B |
- | |
Here cometh oft the tender nursery maid | D |
While in her ear her love his tale doth pour | E |
Meantime her infant doth her charge evade | D |
And rambleth sagely on the sandy shore | E |
Till the sly sea crab low in ambush laid | D |
Seizeth his leg and biteth him full sore | E |
Ah me what sounds the shuddering echoes bore | E |
When his small treble mixed with Ocean's roar | E |
- | |
Hard by there stands an ancient hostelrie | E |
And at its side a garden where the bear | E |
The stealthy catamount and coon agree | E |
To work deceit on all who gather there | E |
And when Augusta that unconscious fair | E |
With nuts and apples plieth Bruin free | E |
Lo the green parrot claweth her back hair | E |
And the gray monkey grabbeth fruits that she | E |
On her gay bonnet wears and laugheth loud in glee | E |
