Being asked by an intimate party | B |
Which the same I would term as a friend | C |
Though his health it were vain to call hearty | B |
Since the mind to deceit it might lend | C |
For his arm it was broken quite recent | D |
And there's something gone wrong with his lung | E |
Which is why it is proper and decent | D |
I should write what he runs off his tongue | E |
- | |
First he says Miss he's read through your letter | F |
To the end and the end came too soon | G |
That a slight illness kept him your debtor | F |
Which for weeks he was wild as a loon | G |
That his spirits are buoyant as yours is | H |
That with you Miss he challenges Fate | I |
Which the language that invalid uses | J |
At times it were vain to relate | I |
- | |
And he says that the mountains are fairer | F |
For once being held in your thought | K |
That each rock holds a wealth that is rarer | F |
Than ever by gold seeker sought | K |
Which are words he would put in these pages | J |
By a party not given to guile | L |
Though the claim not at date paying wages | J |
Might produce in the sinful a smile | L |
- | |
He remembers the ball at the Ferry | B |
And the ride and the gate and the vow | M |
And the rose that you gave him that very | B |
Same rose he is treasuring now | M |
Which his blanket he's kicked on his trunk Miss | N |
And insists on his legs being free | B |
And his language to me from his bunk Miss | N |
Is frequent and painful and free | B |
- | |
He hopes you are wearing no willows | O |
But are happy and gay all the while | L |
That he knows which this dodging of pillows | O |
Imparts but small ease to the style | L |
And the same you will pardon he knows Miss | N |
That though parted by many a mile | L |
Yet were HE lying under the snows Miss | N |
They'd melt into tears at your smile | L |
- | |
And you'll still think of him in your pleasures | P |
In your brief twilight dreams of the past | Q |
In this green laurel spray that he treasures | P |
It was plucked where your parting was last | Q |
In this specimen but a small trifle | R |
It will do for a pin for your shawl | S |
Which the truth not to wickedly stifle | R |
Was his last week's clean up and HIS ALL | S |
- | |
He's asleep which the same might seem strange Miss | N |
Were it not that I scorn to deny | T |
That I raised his last dose for a change Miss | N |
In view that his fever was high | T |
But he lies there quite peaceful and pensive | U |
And now my respects Miss to you | V |
Which my language although comprehensive | U |
Might seem to be freedom is true | V |
- | |
For I have a small favor to ask you | V |
As concerns a bull pup and the same | W |
If the duty would not overtask you | V |
You would please to procure for me GAME | W |
And send per express to the Flat Miss | N |
For they say York is famed for the breed | X |
Which though words of deceit may be that Miss | N |
I'll trust to your taste Miss indeed | X |
- | |
P S Which this same interfering | Y |
Into other folks' way I despise | Z |
Yet if it so be I was hearing | Y |
That it's just empty pockets as lies | Z |
Betwixt you and Joseph it follers | Z |
That having no family claims | Z |
Here's my pile which it's six hundred dollars | Z |
As is YOURS with respects | Z |
