Guild's Signal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDEEB FFGHIJJB KKBDCLMB NNBBBJJB OOBAAJJB

Two low whistles quaint and clearA
That was the signal the engineerA
That was the signal that Guild 'tis saidB
Gave to his wife at ProvidenceC
As through the sleeping town and thenceD
Out in the nightE
On to the lightE
Down past the farms lying white he spedB
-
As a husband's greeting scant no doubtF
Yet to the woman looking outF
Watching and waiting no serenadeG
Love song or midnight roundelayH
Said what that whistle seemed to sayI
To my trust trueJ
So love to youJ
Working or waiting good night it saidB
-
Brisk young bagmen tourists fineK
Old commuters along the lineK
Brakemen and porters glanced aheadB
Smiled as the signal sharp intenseD
Pierced through the shadows of ProvidenceC
Nothing amissL
Nothing it isM
Only Guild calling his wife they saidB
-
Summer and winter the old refrainN
Rang o'er the billows of ripening grainN
Pierced through the budding boughs o'erheadB
Flew down the track when the red leaves burnedB
Like living coals from the engine spurnedB
Sang as it flewJ
To our trust trueJ
First of all duty Good night it saidB
-
And then one night it was heard no moreO
From Stonington over Rhode Island shoreO
And the folk in Providence smiled and saidB
As they turned in their beds The engineerA
Has once forgotten his midnight cheerA
ONE only knewJ
To his trust trueJ
Guild lay under his engine deadB
