After the men were ordered to lie down a white rabbitA
which had been hopping hither and thither over the fieldB
swept by grape and musketry took refuge among theC
skirmishers in the breast of a corporal ReportD
of the Battle of Malvern HillE
-
-
Bunny lying in the grassF
Saw the shining column passF
Saw the starry banner flyG
Saw the chargers fret and fumeH
Saw the flapping hat and plumeH
Saw them with his moist and shyG
Most unspeculative eyeG
Thinking only in the dewI
That it was a fine reviewI
-
Till a flash not all of steelJ
Where the rolling caissons wheelJ
Brought a rumble and a roarK
Rolling down that velvet floorK
And like blows of autumn flailL
Sharply threshed the iron hailL
-
Bunny thrilled by unknown fearsM
Raised his soft and pointed earsM
Mumbled his prehensile lipN
Quivered his pulsating hipN
As the sharp vindictive yellO
Rose above the screaming shellO
Thought the world and all its menP
All the charging squadrons meantQ
All were rabbit hunters thenP
All to capture him intentQ
Bunny was not much to blameR
Wiser folk have thought the sameR
Wiser folk who think they spyG
Every ill begins with IG
-
Wildly panting here and thereS
Bunny sought the freer airS
Till he hopped below the hillE
And saw lying close and stillE
Men with muskets in their handsT
Never Bunny understandsT
That hypocrisy of sleepU
In the vigils grim they keepU
As recumbent on that spotV
They elude the level shotV
-
One a grave and quiet manW
Thinking of his wife and childX
Far beyond the RapidanW
Where the Androscoggin smiledX
Felt the little rabbit creepU
Nestling by his arm and sideY
Wakened from strategic sleepU
To that soft appeal repliedY
Drew him to his blackened breastZ
And But you have guessed the restZ
-
Softly o'er that chosen pairS
Omnipresent Love and CareS
Drew a mightier Hand and ArmA2
Shielding them from every harmA2
Right and left the bullets wavedB2
Saved the saviour for the savedB2
-
-
-
Who believes that equal graceC2
God extends in every placeC2
Little difference he scansD2
Twixt a rabbit's God and man'sD2
