DRAMATIS PERSONAEA
-
First TouristB
Second TouristB
Yuba Bill DriverC
A StrangerC
-
-
FIRST TOURISTB
-
Look how the upland plunges into coverC
Green where the pines fade sullenly awayA
Wonderful those olive depths and wonderful moreoverC
-
SECOND TOURISTB
-
The red dust that rises in a suffocating wayA
-
FIRST TOURISTB
-
Small is the soul that cannot soar above itD
Cannot but cling to its ever kindred clayA
Better be yon bird that seems to breathe and love itD
-
SECOND TOURISTB
-
Doubtless a hawk or some other bird of preyA
Were we like him as sure of a dinnerC
That on our stomachs would comfortably stayA
Or were the fried ham a shade or two just thinnerC
That must confront us at closing of the dayA
Then might you sing like Theocritus or VirgilE
Then might we each make a metrical essayA
But verse just now I must protest and urge illF
Fits a digestion by travel led astrayA
-
CHORUS OF PASSENGERSG
-
Speed Yuba Bill oh speed us to our dinnerC
Speed to the sunset that beckons far awayA
-
SECOND TOURISTB
-
William of Yuba O Son of Nimshi hearkenA
Check thy profanity but not thy chariot's playA
Tell us O William before the shadows darkenA
Where and oh how we shall dine O William sayA
-
YUBA BILLF
-
It ain't my fault nor the Kumpeney's I reckonA
Ye can't get ez square meal ez any on the BayA
Up at you place whar the senset 'pears to beckonA
Ez thet sharp allows in his airy sort o' wayA
Thar woz a place wor yer hash ye might hev wrestledH
Kept by a woman ez chipper ez a jayA
Warm in her breast all the morning sunshine nestledH
Red on her cheeks all the evening's sunshine layA
-
SECOND TOURISTB
-
Praise is but breath O chariot compellerC
Yet of that hash we would bid you farther sayA
-
YUBA BILLF
-
Thar woz a snipe like you a fancy touristB
Kem to that ranch ez if to make a stayA
Ran off the gal and ruined jist the puristI
Critter that livedJ
-
STRANGER quietlyK
-
You're a liar driverC
-
YUBA BILL reaching for his revolverC
-
EhL
Here take my lines somebodyK
-
CHORUS OF PASSENGERSG
-
Hush boys listenA
Inside there's a lady Remember No affrayC
-
YUBA BILLF
-
Ef that man lives the fault ain't mine or his'nA
-
STRANGERC
-
Wait for the sunset that beckons far awayA
Then as you will But meantime friends believe meK
Nowhere on earth lives a purer woman nayA
If my perceptions do surely not deceive meK
She is the lady we have inside to dayA
As for the man you see that blackened pine treeK
Up which the green vine creeps heavenward awayA
He was that scarred trunk and she the vine that sweetlyK
Clothed him with life again and liftedM
-
SECOND TOURISTB
-
Yes but prayA
How know you thisN
-
STRANGERC
-
She's my wifeO
-
YUBA BILLF
-
The h ll you sayA
