Last night above the whistling windA
I heard the welcome rainB
A fusillade upon the roofC
A tattoo on the paneB
The keyhole piped the chimney topD
A warlike trumpet blewE
Yet mingling with these sounds of strifeF
A softer voice stole throughE
-
Give thanks O brothers said the voiceG
That He who sent the rainsH
Hath spared your fields the scarlet dewE
That drips from patriot veinsH
I've seen the grass on Eastern gravesI
In brighter verdure riseJ
But oh the rain that gave it lifeF
Sprang first from human eyesJ
-
I come to wash away no stainB
Upon your wasted leaK
I raise no banners save the onesL
The forest waves to meK
Upon the mountain side where SpringM
Her farthest picket setsN
My reveille awakes a hostO
Of grassy bayonetsN
-
I visit every humble roofC
I mingle with the lowP
Only upon the highest peaksQ
My blessings fall in snowP
Until in tricklings of the streamR
And drainings of the leaK
My unspent bounty comes at lastS
To mingle with the seaK
-
And thus all night above the windA
I heard the welcome rainB
A fusillade upon the roofC
A tattoo on the paneB
The keyhole piped the chimney topD
A warlike trumpet blewE
But mingling with these sounds of strifeF
This hymn of peace stole throughE
