Toward God in heaven spaciousB
With artless faith a boy looks freeC
As toward his mother graciousB
And top of Christmas treeC
But early in the storm of youthD
There wounds him deep the serpent's toothD
His childhood's faith is doubtedE
And floutedE
-
Soon stands in radiant splendorF
With bridal wreath his boyhood's dreamG
Her loving eyes and tenderF
The light of heaven's faith streamG
As by his mother's knee of yoreH
God's name he stammers yet once moreH
The rue of tears now payingI
And prayingI
-
When now life's conflict stirringI
Leads him along through doubtings wildJ
Then upward points unerringI
Close by his side his childJ
With children he a child is stillK
And whatsoe'er his heart may chillK
Prayer for his son is warmingI
TransformingI
-
The greatest man in wonderF
Must ward the child within his breastL
And list 'mid loudest thunderF
Its whisperings unrepressedL
Where oft a hero fell with shameM
The child it was restored his nameM
His better self revealingI
And healingI
-
All great things thought createdL
In child like joy sprang forth and grewN
All strength with goodness matedL
Obeyed the child's voice trueN
When beauty in the soul held swayO
The child gave it in artless playO
All wisdom worldly mindedL
Is blindedL
-
Hail him who forward pressesP
So far that he a home is worthQ
For there alone possessesP
The child life peace on earthQ
Though worn we grieve and hardened growR
What solace 't is our home to knowR
With children's laughter ringingI
And singingI
