Thinking Of The Past Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKLIM NOAPQRSTUV SRIRWRXY

In an idle hour I thought of former daysA
And former friends seemed to be standing in the roomB
And then I wondered 'Where are they now 'C
Like fallen leaves they have tumbled to the Nether SpringsD
Han Yu swallowed his sulphur pillsE
Yet a single illness carried him straight to the graveF
Y an Chen smelled autumn stoneG
But before he was old his strength crumbled awayH
Master Tu possessed the 'Secret of Health'I
All day long he fasted from meat and spiceJ
The Lord Ts'ui trusting a strong drugK
Through the whole winter wore his summer coatL
Yet some by illness and some by sudden deathI
All vanished ere their middle years were passedM
-
Only I who have never dieted myselfN
Have thus protracted a tedious span of ageO
I who in young daysA
Yielded lightly to every lust and greedP
Whose palate craved only for the richest meatQ
And knew nothing of bismuth or calomelR
When hunger came I gulped steaming foodS
When thirst came I drank from the frozen streamT
With verse I served the spirits of my Five GutsU
With wine I watered the three Vital SpotsV
-
Day by day joining the broken clodS
I have lived till now almost sound and wholeR
There is no gap in my two rows of teethI
Limbs and body still serve me wellR
Already I have opened the seventh book of yearsW
Yet I eat my fill and sleep quietlyR
I drink while I may the wine that lies in my cupX
And all else commit to Heaven's careY
