The Race Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBAC DDEEFFF GHIJKKJLIMNL KLMLLOO PQPQRSRS TGUUGST

A girlish voice like a silver bellA
Rang over the sparkling tideB
A race a raceC
She was under the trees by the river sideB
Down from whose boughs dark shadows fellA
And hid her faceC
-
Four skiffs are out on the moonlit streamD
And their oars like bars of silver gleamD
As they dip and flash and kiss the riverE
As swallows do till the moonbeams quiverE
Then the ripples dieF
And the girlish cryF
Floats gaily again to the summer skyF
-
Ready GoG
As the arrow springs from the straightened bowH
The skiffs dart off for the distant goalI
The oars are bent like blades of steelJ
And the hissing waters cleft in twainK
Curl away astern in a feathery trainK
While girlish laughter peal on pealJ
Rings over the river and over the shoreL
And from the island the echoes rollI
We hear the mysterious voice againM
We have won we have wonN
Will you race once moreL
-
The water drips in golden rainK
From the blade of the resting oarL
Again we take our place and againM
That clear voice wakes the shoreL
Go And we bend to our oars once moreL
And banks fly past till the gleaming meadowsO
Give place to the woods and their gloomy shadowsO
-
Our skiff is steered by skilful handsP
Its rowers' arms are strongQ
But muscles are not iron bandsP
To bear such conflict longQ
And hearts beat hard and breath comes fastR
And cheeks too hotly burnS
Before the welcome goal is passedR
The rest two lengths asternS
-
The evening air is growing chillT
The moon is sinking lowG
The race is ours across the waveU
We call but nothing answers saveU
The winds that gently blowG
Come race again But all in vainS
The silvery voice is stillT
