Tennyson Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFGE HIIH JGGJ KLMK NOON

The noble lion groweth oldA
The weight of years his eyesight dimsB
And strength deserts his mighty limbsB
His once warm blood runs slow and coldA
-
The sunlight of another dayC
Slants through the jungle's tangled massD
He marks the shadows but alasD
Sees not the sun among them playC
-
His regal head lies buried deepE
Between his paws his reign is o'erF
His great voice stirs the world no moreG
And round his lair the jackals creepE
-
They scent their prey and with the joyH
Of meaner natures far and wideI
From deep obscurity they glideI
The dying monarch to annoyH
-
With naked fangs they circle roundJ
And fiercely snarl until once moreG
The thicket quivers at his roarG
And all their paltry yelps are drownedJ
-
The woodland with his voice is thrilledK
Though hope abandoned mars the strainL
But echoes cease and then againM
With jackal barks the air is filledK
-
Though dying he is royal yetN
Even now earth doth not hold his peerO
Bark jackals bark ere dies the yearO
The world your tumult will forgetN
