O waly waly up the bankA
And waly waly doun the braeB
And waly waly yon burn sideC
Where I and my Love wont to gaeD
I lean'd my back unto an aikD
I thocht it was a trustie treeE
But first it bow'd and syne it brakD
Sae my true love did lichtlie meE
-
O waly waly gin love be bonnieE
A little time while it is newF
But when 'tis auld it waxeth cauldC
And fades awa' like morning dewC
O wherefore should I busk my heidC
Or wherefore should I kame my hairG
For my true Love has me forsookD
And says he'll never lo'e me mairG
-
Now Arthur's Seat sall be my bedC
The sheets sall ne'er be 'filed by meE
Saint Anton's well sall be my drinkD
Since my true Love has forsaken meE
Marti'mas wind when wilt thou blawH
And shake the green leaves aff the treeE
O gentle Death when wilt thou comeI
For of my life I am wear igrave eE
-
'Tis not the frost that freezes fellH
Nor blawing snaw's inclemencieJ
'Tis not sic cauld that makes me cryD
But my Love's heart grown cauld to meE
When we cam in by Glasgow tounF
We were a comely sicht to seeE
My Love was clad in the black velv egrave tE
And I mysel in cramasieE
-
But had I wist before I kistC
That love had been sae ill to winF
I had lock'd my heart in a case o' gowdC
And pinn'd it wi' a siller pinF
And O if my young babe were bornF
And set upon the nurse's kneeE
And I mysel were dead and ganeE
And the green grass growing over meE
