The Seven Virgins, A Carol Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DAE FGH IJH IKLK MNON PBQ PJB MRS TUVU KWJW

All under the leaves and the leaves of lifeA
I met with virgins sevenB
And one of them was Mary mildC
Our Lord's mother of HeavenB
-
'O what are you seeking you seven fair maidsD
All under the leaves of lifeA
Come tell come tell what seek youE
All under the leaves of life '-
-
'We're seeking for no leaves ThomasF
But for a friend of thineG
We're seeking for sweet Jesus ChristH
To be our guide and thine '-
-
'Go down go down to yonder townI
And sit in the galleryJ
And there you'll see sweet Jesus ChristH
Nail'd to a big yew tree '-
-
So down they went to yonder townI
As fast as foot could fallK
And many a grievous bitter tearL
From the virgins' eyes did fallK
-
'O peace Mother O peace MotherM
Your weeping doth me grieveN
I must suffer this ' He saidO
'For Adam and for EveN
-
'O Mother take you John EvangelistP
All for to be your sonB
And he will comfort you sometimesQ
Mother as I have done '-
-
'O come thou John EvangelistP
Thou'rt welcome unto meJ
But more welcome my own dear SonB
Whom I nursed on my knee '-
-
Then He laid His head on His right shoulderM
Seeing death it struck Him nighR
'The Holy Ghost be with your soulS
I die Mother dear I die '-
-
O the rose the gentle roseT
And the fennel that grows so greenU
God give us grace in every placeV
To pray for our king and queenU
-
Furthermore for our enemies allK
Our prayers they should be strongW
Amen good Lord your charityJ
Is the ending of my songW
