The Croppy Boy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EFGG HHHH IIJJ KKLL MMHH NNNO FPNO

It was early early in the springA
The birds did whistle and sweetly singA
Changing their notes from tree to treeB
And the song they sang was Old Ireland freeB
-
It was early early in the nightC
The yeoman cavalry gave me a frightC
The yeoman cavalry was my downfallD
And taken was I by Lord CornwallD
-
'Twas in the guard house where I was laidE
And in a parlor where I was triedF
My sentence passed and my courage lowG
When to Dungannon I was forced to goG
-
As I was passing by my father's doorH
My brother William stood at the doorH
My aged father stood at the doorH
And my tender mother her hair she toreH
-
As I was walking up Wexford StreetI
My own first cousin I chanced to meetI
My own first cousin did me betrayJ
And for one bare guinea swore my life awayJ
-
My sister Mary heard the expressK
She ran upstairs in her morning dressK
Five hundred guineas I will lay downL
To see my brother safe in Wexford TownL
-
As I was walking up Wexford HillM
Who could blame me to cry my fillM
I looked behind and I looked beforeH
But my tender mother I shall ne'er see moreH
-
As I was mounted on the platform highN
My aged father was standing byN
My aged father did me denyN
And the name he gave me was the Croppy BoyO
-
It was in Dungannon this young man diedF
And in Dungannon his body liesP
And you good Christians that do pass byN
Just drop a tear for the Croppy BoyO
