It fell on a day and a bonnie simmer dayA
When green grew aits and barleyB
That there fell out a great disputeC
Between Argyll and AirlieB
-
Argyll has raised an hunder menD
An hunder harness'd rarelyB
And he 's awa' by the back of DunkellB
To plunder the castle of AirlieB
-
Lady Ogilvie looks o'er her bower windowE
And O but she looks warelyB
And there she spied the great ArgyllB
Come to plunder the bonnie house of AirlieB
-
'Come down come down my Lady OgilvieB
Come down and kiss me fairly '-
'O I winna kiss the fause ArgyllB
If he shouldna leave a standing stane in Airlie '-
-
He hath taken her by the left shoulderF
Says 'Dame where lies thy dowry '-
'O it 's east and west yon wan water sideG
And it 's down by the banks of the Airlie '-
-
They hae sought it up they hae sought it downH
They hae sought it maist severelyB
Till they fand it in the fair plum treeB
That shines on the bowling green of AirlieB
-
He hath taken her by the middle sae smallB
And O but she grat sairlyB
And laid her down by the bonnie burn sideG
Til they plunder'd the castle of AirlieB
-
'Gif my gude lord war here this nightI
As he is with King CharlieB
Neither you nor ony ither Scottish lordJ
Durst avow to the plundering of AirlieB
-
'Gif my gude lord war now at hameK
As he is with his kingL
There durst nae a Campbell in a' ArgyllB
Set fit on Airlie greenM
-
'Then bonnie sons I have borne unto himK
The eleventh ne'er saw his daddyB
But though I had an hunder mairN
I'd gie them a' to King Charlie '-
