In a valley of this restles mindA
I sought in mountain and in meadB
Trusting a true love for to findA
Upon an hill then took I heedB
A voice I heard and near I yedeB
In great dolour complaining thoC
See dear soul how my sides bleedB
Quia amore langueoD
-
Upon this hill I found a treeE
Under a tree a man sittingD
From head to foot wounded was heE
His hearte blood I saw bleedingD
A seemly man to be a kingD
A gracious face to look untoB
I ask egrave d why he had painingD
He said Quia amore langueoD
-
I am true love that false was neverF
My sister man's soul I loved her thusG
Because we would in no wise disseverF
I left my kingdom gloriousG
I purveyed her a palace full preciousG
She fled I followed I loved her soC
That I suffered this pain piteousC
Quia amore langueoD
-
My fair love and my spouse brightB
I saved her from beating and she hath me betB
I clothed her in grace and heavenly lightB
This bloody shirt she hath on me setB
For longing of love yet would I not letB
Sweete strokes are these loC
I have loved her ever as I her hetB
Quia amore langueoD
-
I crowned her with bliss and she me with thornH
I led her to chamber and she me to dieB
I brought her to worship and she me to scornH
I did her reverence and she me villanyH
To love that loveth is no maistryF
Her hate made never my love her foeC
Ask me then no question whyB
Quia amore langueoD
-
Look unto mine handes manH
These gloves were given me when I her soughtB
They be not white but red and wanH
Embroidered with blood my spouse them broughtB
They will not off I loose hem noughtB
I woo her with hem wherever she goD
These hands for her so friendly foughtB
Quia amore langueoD
-
Marvel not man though I sit stillI
See love hath shod me wonder straitB
Buckled my feet as was her willI
With sharpe nails well thou may'st waitB
In my love was never desaitB
All my membres I have opened her toB
My body I made her herte's baitB
Quia amore langueoD
-
In my side I have made her nestB
Look in how weet a wound is hereF
This is her chamber here shall she restB
That she and I may sleep in fereF
Here may she wash if any filth wereF
Here is seat for all her woeD
Come when she will she shall have cheerF
Quia amore langueoD
-
I will abide till she be readyB
I will her sue if she say nayH
If she be retchless I will be greedyB
If she be dangerous I will her prayH
If she weep then bide I ne mayH
Mine arms ben spread to clip her me toB
Cry once I come now soul assayB
Quia amore langueoD
-
Fair love let us go playH
Apples ben ripe in my gardayneH
I shall thee clothe in a new arrayH
Thy meat shall be milk honey and wineH
Fair love let us go dineH
Thy sustenance is in my crippe loD
Tarry thou not my fair spouse mineH
Quia amore langueoD
-
If thou be foul I shall thee make cleanH
If thou be sick I shall thee healJ
If thou mourn ought I shall thee meneH
Why wilt thou not fair love with me dealJ
Foundest thou ever love so lealJ
What wilt thou soul that I shall doB
I may not unkindly thee appealJ
Quia amore langueoD
-
What shall I do now with my spouseC
But abide her of my gentlenessC
Till that she look out of her houseC
Of fleshly affection love mine she isC
Her bed is made her bolster is blissC
Her chamber is chosen is there none moD
Look out on me at the window of kindenessC
Quia amore langueoD
-
My love is in her chamber hold your peaceC
Make ye no noise but let her sleepK
My babe I would not were in diseaseC
I may not hear my dear child weepK
With my pap I shall her keepK
Ne marvel ye not though I tend her toB
This wound in my side had ne'er be so deepK
But Quia amore langueoD
-
Long thou for love never so highB
My love is more than thine may beB
Thou weepest thou gladdest I sit thee byB
Yet wouldst thou once love look unto meB
Should I always feede theeB
With children meat Nay love not soC
I will prove thy love with adversit egraveB
Quia amore langueoD
-
Wax not weary mine own wifeB
What mede is aye to live in comfortB
In tribulation I reign more rifeB
Ofter times than in disportB
In weal and in woe I am aye to supportB
Mine own wife go not me froC
Thy mede is marked when thou art mortB
Quia amore langueoD
