Preparations Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDD EEFFBB GGHHI JJKKLM NNOOPP

Yet if His Majesty our sovereign lordA
Should of his own accordA
Friendly himself inviteB
And say 'I'll be your guest to morrow night 'C
How should we stir ourselves call and commandD
All hands to work 'Let no man idle standD
-
'Set me fine Spanish tables in the hallE
See they be fitted allE
Let there be room to eatF
And order taken that there want no meatF
See every sconce and candlestick made brightB
That without tapers they may give a lightB
-
'Look to the presence are the carpets spreadG
The dazie o'er the headG
The cushions in the chairsH
And all the candles lighted on the stairsH
Perfume the chambers and in any caseI
Let each man give attendance in his place '-
-
Thus if a king were coming would we doJ
And 'twere good reason tooJ
For 'tis a duteous thingK
To show all honour to an earthly kingK
And after all our travail and our costL
So he be pleased to think no labour lostM
-
But at the coming of the King of HeavenN
All 's set at six and sevenN
We wallow in our sinO
Christ cannot find a chamber in the innO
We entertain Him always like a strangerP
And as at first still lodge Him in the mangerP
