O what a plague is loveA
How shall I bear itB
She will inconstant proveC
I greatly fear itB
She so torments my mindD
That my strength failethE
And wavers with the windD
As a ship sailethE
Please her the best I mayF
She loves still to gainsayF
Alack and well a dayF
Phillada flouts meG
-
At the fair yesterdayF
She did pass by meG
She look'd another wayF
And would not spy meG
I woo'd her for to dineH
But could not get herI
Will had her to the wineH
He might entreat herI
With Daniel she did danceJ
On me she look'd askanceJ
O thrice unhappy chanceJ
Phillada flouts meG
-
Fair maid be not so coyK
Do not disdain meG
I am my mother's joyK
Sweet entertain meG
She'll give me when she diesL
All that is fittingM
Her poultry and her beesN
And her goose sittingM
A pair of mattrass bedsO
And a bag full of shredsO
And yet for all this guedesO
Phillada flouts meG
-
She hath a clout of mineH
Wrought with blue coventryG
Which she keeps for a signH
Of my fidelityG
But i' faith if she flinchP
She shall not wear itB
To Tib my t'other wenchP
I mean to bear itB
And yet it grieves my heartQ
So soon from her to partQ
Death strike me with his dartQ
Phillada flouts meG
-
Thou shalt eat crudded creamR
All the year lastingM
And drink the crystal streamR
Pleasant in tastingM
Whig and whey whilst thou lustS
And bramble berriesO
Pie lid and pastry crustS
Pears plums and cherriesO
Thy raiment shall be thinT
Made of a weevil's skinT
Yet all 's not worth a pinT
Phillada flouts meG
-
In the last month of MayF
I made her posiesO
I heard her often sayO
That she loved rosesO
Cowslips and gillyflowersO
And the white lilyG
I brought to deck the bowersO
For my sweet PhillyG
But she did all disdainU
And threw them back againV
Therefore 'tis flat and plainU
Phillada flouts meG
-
Fair maiden have a careW
And in time take meG
I can have those as fairW
If you forsake meG
For Doll the dairy maidX
Laugh'd at me latelyG
And wanton WinifredY
Favours me greatlyG
One throws milk on my clothesO
T'other plays with my noseO
What wanting signs are thoseO
Phillada flouts meG
-
I cannot work nor sleepZ
At all in seasonA2
Love wounds my heart so deepZ
Without all reasonA2
I 'gin to pine awayO
In my love's shadowB2
Like as a fat beast mayO
Penn'd in a meadowB2
I shall be dead I fearC2
Within this thousand yearC2
And all for that my dearC2
