Nothing Is Lost Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDC EFFGH IJDKI LMNOL PJJQR STUVS WCCXW

Nothing is lostA
We are too sad to know that or too blindB
Only in visited moments do we understandC
It is not that the dead returnD
They are about us always though unguessedC
-
This penciled Latin verseE
You dying wrote me ten years past and moreF
Brings you as much alive to me as the self you wrote it forF
Dear father as I read your wordsG
With no word but AlasH
-
Lines in a letter lines in a faceI
Are the faithful currents of life the boy has writtenJ
His parents across his forehead and as we burnD
Our bodies up each seven yearsK
His own past self has left no plainer traceI
-
Nothing diesL
The cells pass on their secrets we betray themM
Unknowingly in a freckle in the wayN
We walk recall some ancestorO
And Adam in the color of our eyesL
-
Yes on the face of the new bornP
Before the soul has taken full possessionJ
There pass as over a screen in successionJ
The images of other beingsQ
Face after face looks out and then is goneR
-
Nothing is lost for all in love surviveS
I lay my cheek against his sleeping limbsT
To feel if he is warm and touch in himU
Those children whom no shawl could warmV
No arms no grief no longing could reviveS
-
Thus what we see or knowW
Is only a tiny portion at the bestC
Of the life in which we share an iceberg s crestC
Our sunlit present our partial senseX
With deep supporting multitudes belowW
