AND has my darling told a lieA
Did she forget that GOD was byA
That GOD who saw the things she didB
From whom no action can be hidB
Did she forget that GOD could seeC
And hear wherever she might beC
-
He made your eyes and can discernD
Whichever way you think to turnD
He made your ears and he can hearE
When you think nobody is nearF
In every place by night or dayG
He watches all you do and sayG
-
Oh how I wish you would but tryA
To act as shall not need a lieA
And when you wish a thing to doH
That has been once forbidden youH
Remember that nor ever dareI
To disobey for GOD is thereI
-
Why should you fear the truth to tellJ
Does falsehood ever do so wellJ
Can you be satisfied to knowK
There's something wrong to hide belowK
No let your fault be what it mayG
To own it is the happy wayG
-
So long as you your crime concealL
You cannot light and gladsome feelL
Your little heart will seem oppress'dM
As if a weight were on your breastM
And e'en your mother's eye to meetN
Will tinge your face with shame and heatN
-
Yes GOD has made your duty clearF
By every blush by every fearF
And conscience like an angel kindO
Keeps watch to bring it to your mindO
Its friendly warnings ever heedP
And neither tell a lie nor needP
