THERE were two friends a very charming pairA
Brunette the brown and Blanchidine the fairA
And she to love Brunette did constantly inclineB
Nor less did Brunette love sweet BlanchidineB
Brunette in dress was neat yet always plainB
But Blanchidine of finery was vainB
Now Blanchidine a new acquaintance madeC
A little girl most sumptuously array'dC
In plumes and ribbons gaudy to beholdD
And India frock with spots of shining goldD
Said Blanchidine 'A girl so richly dress'dE
Should surely be by every one caress'dE
To play with me if she will condescendF
Henceforth 'tis she alone shall be my friend 'G
And so for this new friend in silks adorn'dH
Her poor Brunette was slighted left and scorn'dH
Of Blanchidine's vast stock of pretty toysI
A wooden doll her every thought employsI
Its neck so white so smooth its cheeks so redJ
She kiss'd she fondled and she took to bedJ
Mamma now brought her home a doll of waxK
Its hair in ringlets white and soft as flaxK
Its eyes could open and its eyes could shutL
And on it too with taste its clothes were putM
'My dear wax doll ' sweet Blanchidine would cryN
Her doll of wood was thrown neglected byN
One summer's day 'twas in the month of JuneB
The sun blazed out all in the heat of noonB
'My waxen doll ' she cried 'my dear my charmerO
What are you cold but you shall soon be warmer 'G
She laid it in the sun misfortune direP
The wax ran down as if before the fireO
Each beauteous feature quickly disappear'dQ
And melting left a blank all soil'd and smear'dQ
Her doll disfigured she beheld amazedR
And thus express'd her sorrow as she gazedR
'Is it for you my heart I have estrangedS
From that I fondly loved which has not changedS
Just so may change my new acquaintance fineB
For whom I left Brunette that friend of mineB
No more by outside show will I be luredT
Of such capricious whims I think I'm curedT
To plain old friends my heart shall still be trueU
Nor change for every face because 'tis new 'G
Her slighted wooden doll resumed its charmsV
And wronged Brunette she clasp'd within her armsV
