The Village Green Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD BEBE FGFG HEHI JAJA

ON the cheerful village greenA
Skirted round with houses smallB
All the boys and girls are seenA
Playing there with hoop and ballB
-
Now they frolic hand in handC
Making many a merry chainD
Then they form a warlike bandC
Marching o'er the level plainD
-
Now ascends the worsted ballB
High it rises in the airE
Or against the cottage wallB
Up and down it bounces thereE
-
Then the hoop with even paceF
Runs before the merry throngsG
Joy is seen in every faceF
Joy is heard in cheerful songsG
-
Rich array and mansions proudH
Gilded toys and costly fareE
Would not make the little crowdH
Half so happy as they areI
-
Then contented with my stateJ
Where true pleasure may be seenA
Let me envy not the greatJ
On a cheerful village greenA
