I'm a helpless cripple childB
Gentle Christians pity meC
Once in rosy health I smiledB
Blithe and gay as you can beC
And upon the village greenD
First in every sport was seenD
-
Now alas I'm weak and lowE
Cannot either work or playF
Tottering on my crutches slowE
Thus I drag my weary wayF
Now no longer dance and singG
Gaily in the merry ringG
-
Many sleepless nights I liveH
Turning on my weary bedI
Softest pillows cannot giveJ
Slumber to my aching headI
Constant anguish makes it flyK
From my heavy wakeful eyeK
-
And when morning beams returnL
Still no comfort beams for meC
Still my limbs with fever burnL
Painful still my crippled kneeC
And another tedious dayF
Passes slow and sad awayF
-
From my chamber window highK
Lifted to my easy chairM
I the village green can spyK
Once I used to frolic thereM
March or beat my new bought drumN
Happy times no more to comeN
-
There I see my fellows gayF
Sporting on the daisied turfO
And amidst their cheerful playF
Stopp'd by many a merry laughP
But the sight I scarce can bearM
Leaning in my easy chairM
-
Let not then the scoffing eyeK
Laugh my twisted leg to seeC
Gentle Christians passing byK
Stop awhile and pity meC
And for you I'll breathe a prayerM
Leaning in my easy chairM
