Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDE FGFHII JKJKLM NONOPP J JQRR SFSFTT OUOFEE JDJDVV WXWXYYOne ugly trick has often spoil'd | A |
The sweetest and the best | B |
Matilda though a pleasant child | C |
One ugly trick possess'd | B |
Which like a cloud before the skies | D |
Hid all her better qualities | E |
- | |
Sometimes she'd lift the tea pot lid | F |
To peep at what was in it | G |
Or tilt the kettle if you did | F |
But turn your back a minute | H |
In vain you told her not to touch | I |
Her trick of meddling grew so much | I |
- | |
Her grandmamma went out one day | J |
And by mistake she laid | K |
Her spectacles and snuff box gay | J |
Too near the little maid | K |
Ah well thought she I'll try them on | L |
As soon as grandmamma is gone | M |
- | |
Forthwith she placed upon her nose | N |
The glasses large and wide | O |
And looking round as I suppose | N |
The snuff box too she spied | O |
Oh what a pretty box is that | P |
I'll open it said little Matt | P |
- | |
I know that grandmamma would say | J |
'Don't meddle with it dear ' | - |
But then she's far enough away | J |
And no one else is near | Q |
Besides what can there be amiss | R |
In opening such a box as this | R |
- | |
So thumb and finger went to work | S |
To move the stubborn lid | F |
And presently a mighty jerk | S |
The mighty mischief did | F |
For all at once ah woful case | T |
The snuff came puffing in her face | T |
- | |
Poor eyes and nose and mouth beside | O |
A dismal sight presented | U |
In vain as bitterly she cried | O |
Her folly she repented | F |
In vain she ran about for ease | E |
She could do nothing now but sneeze | E |
- | |
She dash'd the spectacles away | J |
To wipe her tingling eyes | D |
And as in twenty bits they lay | J |
Her grandmamma she spies | D |
Heyday and what's the matter now | V |
Says grandmamma with lifted brow | V |
- | |
Matilda smarting with the pain | W |
And tingling still and sore | X |
Made many a promise to refrain | W |
From meddling evermore | X |
And 'tis a fact as I have heard | Y |
She ever since has kept her word | Y |
