Of all the maids of fair ScotlandA
The fairest was MarjorieB
And young Benjie was her ae true loveC
And a dear true love was heB
-
And wow but they were lovers dearD
And lov'd full constantlieE
But aye the mair when they fell outF
The sairer was their pleaE
-
And they ha'e quarrell'd on a dayG
Till Marjorie's heart grew waeH
And she said she'd chuse another luveC
And let young Benjie gaeI
-
And he was stout and proud heartedJ
And thought o't bitterlieE
And he's gane by the wan moonlightK
To meet his MarjorieE
-
Oh open open my true loveC
Oh open and let me inL
I darena open young BenjieM
My three brothers are withinL
-
Ye lee ye lee ye bonnie burdN
Sae loud's I hear ye leeE
As I came by the Louden banksO
They bade gude e'en to meE
-
But fare ye weel my ae fause loveC
That I have lov'd sae langP
It sets ye chuse another loveC
And let young Benjie gangP
-
Then Marjorie turn'd her round aboutF
The tear blinding her e'eE
I darena darena let thee inL
But I'll come down to theeE
-
Then salt she smil'd and said to himQ
Oh what ill ha'e I doneR
He took her in his arms twaH
And threw her o'er the linnL
-
The stream was strong the maid was stoutF
And laith laith to be dangP
But ere she wan the Louden banksO
Her fair colour was wanS
-
Then up bespake her eldest brotherT
Oh see na ye what I seeE
And out then spake her second brotherT
It is our sister MarjorieE
-
Out then spake her eldest brotherT
Oh how shall we her kenU
And out then spake her youngest brotherT
There's a honey mark on her chinL
-
Then they've ta'en the comely corpseV
And laid it on the groundW
Saying Wha has kill'd our ae sisterT
And how can he be foundW
-
The night it is her low lykewakeP
The morn her burial dayG
And we maun watch at mirk midnightK
And hear what she will sayG
-
With doors ajar and candles lightK
And torches burning clearD
The streekit corpse till still midnightK
They waked but naething hearX
-
About the middle of the nightK
The cocks began to crawY
And at the dead hour of the nightK
The corpse began to thrawY
-
Oh wha has done thee wrang sisterY
Or dared the deadly sinL
Wha was sae stout and fear'd nae doutK
As throw ye o'er the linnL
-
Young Benjie was the first ae manZ
I laid my love uponS
He was sae stout and proud heartedK
He threw me o'er the linnL
-
Shall we young Benjie head sisterY
Shall we young Benjie hangP
Or shall we pike out his twa gray eenL
And punish him ere he gangP
-
Ye maunna Benjie head brothersA2
Ye maunna Benjie hangP
But ye maun pike out his twa gray eenL
And punish him ere he gangP
-
Tie a green gravat round his neckP
And lead him out and inL
And the best ae servant about your houseB2
To wait young Benjie onL
-
And aye at every seven years' endK
Ye'll take him to the linnL
For that's the penance he maun dreeY
To scug his deadly sinL
