Willie has ta'en him o'er the faemA
He's wooed a wife and brought her hameA
He's wooed her for her yellow hairB
But his mother wrought her meikle careB
-
And meikle dolour gar'd her dreeB
For lighter she can never beC
But in her bow'r she sits with painD
And Willie mourns o'er her in vainD
-
And to his mother he has ganeD
That vile rank witch of vilest kindE
He says 'My lady has a cupF
With gowd and silver set aboutG
This gudely gift shall be your ainD
And let her be lighter of her bairn '-
-
'Of her bairn she's never be lighterB
Nor in her bow'r to shine the brighterB
But she shall die and turn to clayH
And you shall wed another may '-
-
'Another may I'll never wedI
Another may I'll never bring hame '-
But sighing said that weary wightJ
'I wish my life were at an end '-
-
'Yet gae ye to your mother againD
That vile rank witch of vilest kindE
And say your ladye has a steedK
The like of him's no in the land of LeedK
-
'For he is silver shod beforeB
And he is gowden shod behindE
At every tuft of that horse maneD
There's a golden chess and a bell to ringL
This gudely gift shall be her ainD
And let me be lighter of my bairn '-
-
'Of her young bairn she's ne'er be lighterB
Nor in her bow'r to shine the brighterB
But she shall die and turn to clayH
And ye shall wed another may '-
-
'Another may I'll never wedI
Another may I'll never bring hame '-
But sighing said that weary wightJ
I wish my life were at an end '-
-
'Yet gae ye to your mother againD
That vile rank witch of rankest kindE
And say your ladye has a girdleM
It's all red gowd to the middleM
-
'And aye at ilka siller hemA
Hang fifty siller bells and tenD
This gudely gift shall be her ainD
And let me be lighter of my bairn '-
-
'Of her young bairn she's ne'er be lighterB
Nor in your bow'r to shine the brighterB
For she shall die and turn to clayH
And thou shall wed another may '-
-
'Another may I'll never wedI
Another may I'll never bring hame '-
But sighing said that weary wightJ
'I wish my days were at an end '-
-
Then out and spak the Billy BlindE
He spak aye in good time his mindE
'Yet gae ye to the market placeN
And there do buy a loaf of waceN
Do shape it bairn and bairnly likeO
And in it two glassen een you'll putP
-
'Oh wha has loosed the nine witch knotsQ
That were amang that ladye's locksR
And wha's ta'en out the kames of careB
That were amang that ladye's hairB
-
'And wha has ta'en down that bush of woodbineD
That hung between her bow'r and mineD
And wha has kill'd the master kidS
That ran beneath that ladye's bedI
And wha has loosed her left foot sheeT
And let that ladye lighter be '-
-
Syne Willie's loosed the nine witch knotsQ
That were amang that ladye's locksR
And Willie's ta'en out the kames of careB
That were into that ladye's hairB
And he's ta'en down the bush of woodbineD
Hung atween her bow'r and the witch carlineD
-
And he has killed the master kidS
That ran beneath that ladye's bedI
And he has loosed her left foot sheeT
And latten that ladye lighter beC
And now he has gotten a bonnie sonD
And meikle grace be him uponD
