To C. H. Arkcoll Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBC ABABBCBC ABABBCBC D ACAC

Let them boast of Arabia oppressedA
By the odour of myrrh on the breezeB
In the isles of the East and the WestA
That are sweet with the cinnamon treesB
Let the sandal wood perfume the seasB
Give the roses to Rhodes and to CreteC
We are more than content if you pleaseB
With the smell of bog myrtle and peatC
-
Though Dan Virgil enjoyed himself bestA
With the scent of the limes when the beesB
Hummed low 'round the doves in their nestA
While the vintagers lay at their easeB
Had he sung in our northern degreesB
He'd have sought a securer retreatC
He'd have dwelt where the heart of us fleesB
With the smell of bog myrtle and peatC
-
Oh the broom has a chivalrous crestA
And the daffodil's fair on the leasB
And the soul of the Southron might restA
And be perfectly happy with theseB
But WE that were nursed on the kneesB
Of the hills of the North we would fleetC
Where our hearts might their longing appeaseB
With the smell of bog myrtle and peatC
-
ENVOYD
-
Ah Constance the land of our questA
It is far from the sounds of the streetC
Where the Kingdom of Galloway's blestA
With the smell of bog myrtle and peatC
