There was a knight and lady brightA
Set trysts amo the broomB
The one to come at morning eavC
The other at afternoonD
-
I'll wager a wager wi' you he saidE
An hundred marks and tenF
That ye shall not go to Broomfield HillsG
Return a maiden againF
-
I'll wager a wager wi' you she saidE
A hundred pounds and tenF
That I will gang to Broomfield HillsG
A maiden return againF
-
The lady stands in her bower doorH
And thus she made her maneI
Oh shall I gang to Broomfield HillsG
Or shall I stay at hameB
-
If I do gang to Broomfield HillsG
A maid I'll not returnJ
But if I stay from Broomfield HillsG
I'll be a maid mis swornK
-
Then out it speaks an auld witch wifeC
Sat in the bower aboonK
O ye shall gang to Broomfield HillsG
Ye shall not stay at hameB
-
But when ye gang to Broomfield HillsG
Walk nine times round and roundL
Down below a bonny burn bankM
Ye'll find your love sleeping soundL
-
Ye'll pu the bloom frae off the broomB
Strew't at his head and feetN
And aye the thicker that ye do strewO
The sounder he will sleepP
-
The broach that is on your napkinK
Put it on his breast baneK
To let him know when he does wakeQ
That's true love's come and ganeK
-
The rings that are on your fingersR
Lay them down on a staneK
To let him know when he does wakeQ
That's true love's come and ganeK
-
And when he hae your work all doneK
Ye'll gang to a bush o' broomB
And then you'll hear what he will sayS
When he sees ye are ganeK
-
When she came to Broomfield HillsG
She walked it nine times roundL
And down below yon burn bankM
She found him sleeping soundL
-
She pu'd the bloom frae off the broomB
Strew'd it at 's head and feetN
And aye the thicker that she strewdN
The sounder he did sleepP
-
The broach that was on her napkinK
She put it on his breast baneK
To let him know when he did wakeQ
His love was come and ganeK
-
The rings that were on her fingersR
She laid upon a staneK
To let him know when he did wakeQ
His love was come and ganeK
-
Now when she had her work all duneK
She went to a bush o' broomB
That she might hear what he did sayS
When he saw that she was ganeK
-
O where were ye my guid grey houndN
That I paid for sae dearT
Ye didna waken me frae my sleepP
When my true love was sae nearT
-
I scraped wi' my foot masterU
Till a' my collars rangV
But still the mair that I did scrapeW
Waken woud ye naneK
-
Where were ye my bony brown steedN
That I paid for sae dearT
That ye woudna waken me out o' my sleepP
When my love was sae nearT
-
I patted wi my foot masterU
Till a' my bridles rangV
But the mair that I did pattN
Waken woud ye naneK
-
O where were ye my gay goss hawkX
That I paid for sae dearT
That ye woudna waken me out o' my sleepP
When ye saw my love nearT
-
I flapped wi my wings masterU
Till a' my bells they rangV
But still the mair that I did flapY
Waken woud ye naneK
-
O where were ye my merry young menK
That I pay meat and feeC
That ye woudna waken me out o' my sleepP
When my love ye did seeC
-
Ye'll sleep mair on the night masterU
And wake mair on the dayS
Gae sooner down to Broomfield HillsG
When ye've sic pranks to playS
-
If I had seen any armed menK
Come riding over the hillZ
But I saw but a fair ladyC
Come quietly you untilZ
-
O wae mat worth yow my young menK
That I pay meat and feeC
That ye woudna waken me frae sleepP
When ye my love did seeC
-
O had I waked when she was nighC
And o her got my willZ
I shoudna cared upon the mornK
The sma birds o her were fillZ
-
When she went out right bitter she weptN
But singing came she hameB
Says I hae been at Broomfield HillsG
And maid returned againK
