It fell on a day and a bonnie summer dayA
When the corn grew green and yellowB
That there fell out a great disputeC
Between Argyle and AirlyB
-
The Duke o' Montrose has written to ArgyleB
To come in the morning earlyB
An' lead in his men by the back O' DunkeldC
To plunder the bonnie house o' AirlyB
-
The lady look'd o'er her window sae hieD
And O but she looked wearyB
And there she espied the great ArgyleB
Come to plunder the bonnie house o' AirlyB
-
'Come down come down Lady Margaret ' he saysE
'Come down and kiss me fairlyB
Or before the morning clear daylightC
I'll no leave a standing stane in Airly '-
-
'I wadna kiss thee great ArgyleB
I wadna kiss thee fairlyB
I wadna kiss thee great ArgyleB
Gin you shouldna leave a standing stane Airly '-
-
He has ta'en her by the middle sae sma'F
Says 'Lady where is your drury '-
'It's up and down by the bonnie burn sideC
Amang the planting of Airly '-
-
They sought it up they sought it downG
They sought it late and earlyB
And found it in the bonnie balm treeB
That shines on the bowling green o' AirlyB
-
He has ta'en her by the left shoulderH
And O but she grat sairlyB
And led her down to yon green bankI
Till he plundered the bonnie house o' AirlyB
-
'O it's I hae seven braw sons ' she saysE
'And the youngest ne'er saw his daddieC
And altho' I had as mony maeF
I wad gie them a' to CharlieB
-
'But gin my good lord had been at hameF
As this night he is wi' CharlieB
There durst na a Campbell in a' the westC
Hae plundered the bonnie house o' AirlyB
