Whan he cam to his ain luve's bouir | B |
He tirled at the pin | C |
And sae ready was his fair fause luve | D |
To rise and let him in | C |
- | |
O welcome welcome Sir Roland she says | E |
Thrice welcome thou art to me | F |
For this night thou wilt feast in my secret bouir | B |
And to morrow we'll wedded be | F |
- | |
This night is hallow eve he said | G |
And to morrow is hallow day | H |
And I dreamed a drearie dream yestreen | C |
That has made my heart fu' wae | I |
- | |
I dreamed a drearie dream yestreen | C |
And I wish it may cum to gude | J |
I dreamed that ye slew my best grew hound | K |
And gied me his lappered blude | K |
- | |
- | |
- | |
Unbuckle your belt Sir Roland she said | K |
And set you safely down | C |
O your chamber is very dark fair maid | K |
And the night is wondrous lown | C |
- | |
Yes dark dark is my secret bouir | B |
And lown the midnight may be | F |
For there is none waking in a' this tower | B |
But thou my true love and me | F |
- | |
- | |
- | |
She has mounted on her true love's steed | K |
By the ae light o' the moon | C |
She has whipped him and spurred him | L |
And roundly she rade frae the toun | C |
- | |
She hadna ridden a mile o' gate | K |
Never a mile but ane | C |
When she was aware of a tall young man | C |
Slow riding o'er the plain | C |
- | |
She turned her to the right about | K |
Then to the left turn'd she | F |
But aye 'tween her and the wan moonlight | K |
That tall knight did she see | F |
- | |
And he was riding burd alane | C |
On a horse as black as jet | K |
But tho' she followed him fast and fell | M |
No nearer could she get | K |
- | |
O stop O stop young man she said | K |
For I in dule am dight | K |
O stop and win a fair lady's luve | D |
If you be a leal true knight | K |
- | |
But nothing did the tall knight say | H |
And nothing did he blin | C |
Still slowly ride he on before | B |
And fast she rade behind | K |
- | |
She whipped her steed she spurred her steed | K |
Till his breast was all a foam | N |
But nearer unto that tall young knight | K |
By Our Ladye she could not come | O |
- | |
O if you be a gay young knight | K |
As well I trow you be | F |
Pull tight your bridle reins and stay | H |
Till I come up to thee | F |
- | |
But nothing did that tall knight say | H |
And no whit did he blin | C |
Until he reached a broad river's side | K |
And there he drew his rein | C |
- | |
O is this water deep he said | K |
As it is wondrous dun | C |
Or is it sic as a saikless maid | K |
And a leal true knight may swim | L |
- | |
The water it is deep she said | K |
As it is wondrous dun | C |
But it is sic as a saikless maid | K |
And a leal true knight may swim | L |
- | |
The knight spurred on his tall black steed | K |
The lady spurred on her brown | C |
And fast they rade unto the flood | K |
And fast they baith swam down | C |
- | |
The water weets my tae she said | K |
The water weets my knee | C |
And hold up my bridle reins sir knight | K |
For the sake of Our Ladye | P |
- | |
If I would help thee now he said | K |
It were a deadly sin | C |
For I've sworn neir to trust a fair may's word | K |
Till the water weets her chin | C |
- | |
Oh the water weets my waist she said | K |
Sae does it weet my skin | C |
And my aching heart rins round about | K |
The burn maks sic a din | C |
- | |
The water is waxing deeper still | Q |
Sae does it wax mair wide | K |
And aye the farther that we ride on | C |
Farther off is the other side | K |
- | |
O help me now thou false false knight | K |
Have pity on my youth | R |
For now the water jawes owre my head | K |
And it gurgles in my mouth | S |
- | |
The knight turned right and round about | K |
All in the middle stream | T |
And he stretched out his head to that lady | C |
But loudly she did scream | T |
- | |
O this is hallow morn he said | K |
And it is your bridal day | H |
But sad would be that gay wedding | U |
If bridegroom and bride were away | H |
- | |
And ride on ride on proud Margaret | K |
Till the water comes o'er your bree | C |
For the bride maun ride deep and deeper yet | K |
Wha rides this ford wi' me | C |
- | |
Turn round turn round proud Margaret | K |
Turn ye round and look on me | C |
Thou hast killed a true knight under trust | K |
And his ghost now links on with thee | C |
