Child vol i Early EditionA
-
-
Whan he cam to his ain luve's bouirB
He tirled at the pinC
And sae ready was his fair fause luveD
To rise and let him inC
-
O welcome welcome Sir Roland she saysE
Thrice welcome thou art to meF
For this night thou wilt feast in my secret bouirB
And to morrow we'll wedded beF
-
This night is hallow eve he saidG
And to morrow is hallow dayH
And I dreamed a drearie dream yestreenC
That has made my heart fu' waeI
-
I dreamed a drearie dream yestreenC
And I wish it may cum to gudeJ
I dreamed that ye slew my best grew houndK
And gied me his lappered bludeK
-
-
-
Unbuckle your belt Sir Roland she saidK
And set you safely downC
O your chamber is very dark fair maidK
And the night is wondrous lownC
-
Yes dark dark is my secret bouirB
And lown the midnight may beF
For there is none waking in a' this towerB
But thou my true love and meF
-
-
-
She has mounted on her true love's steedK
By the ae light o' the moonC
She has whipped him and spurred himL
And roundly she rade frae the tounC
-
She hadna ridden a mile o' gateK
Never a mile but aneC
When she was aware of a tall young manC
Slow riding o'er the plainC
-
She turned her to the right aboutK
Then to the left turn'd sheF
But aye 'tween her and the wan moonlightK
That tall knight did she seeF
-
And he was riding burd alaneC
On a horse as black as jetK
But tho' she followed him fast and fellM
No nearer could she getK
-
O stop O stop young man she saidK
For I in dule am dightK
O stop and win a fair lady's luveD
If you be a leal true knightK
-
But nothing did the tall knight sayH
And nothing did he blinC
Still slowly ride he on beforeB
And fast she rade behindK
-
She whipped her steed she spurred her steedK
Till his breast was all a foamN
But nearer unto that tall young knightK
By Our Ladye she could not comeO
-
O if you be a gay young knightK
As well I trow you beF
Pull tight your bridle reins and stayH
Till I come up to theeF
-
But nothing did that tall knight sayH
And no whit did he blinC
Until he reached a broad river's sideK
And there he drew his reinC
-
O is this water deep he saidK
As it is wondrous dunC
Or is it sic as a saikless maidK
And a leal true knight may swimL
-
The water it is deep she saidK
As it is wondrous dunC
But it is sic as a saikless maidK
And a leal true knight may swimL
-
The knight spurred on his tall black steedK
The lady spurred on her brownC
And fast they rade unto the floodK
And fast they baith swam downC
-
The water weets my tae she saidK
The water weets my kneeC
And hold up my bridle reins sir knightK
For the sake of Our LadyeP
-
If I would help thee now he saidK
It were a deadly sinC
For I've sworn neir to trust a fair may's wordK
Till the water weets her chinC
-
Oh the water weets my waist she saidK
Sae does it weet my skinC
And my aching heart rins round aboutK
The burn maks sic a dinC
-
The water is waxing deeper stillQ
Sae does it wax mair wideK
And aye the farther that we ride onC
Farther off is the other sideK
-
O help me now thou false false knightK
Have pity on my youthR
For now the water jawes owre my headK
And it gurgles in my mouthS
-
The knight turned right and round aboutK
All in the middle streamT
And he stretched out his head to that ladyC
But loudly she did screamT
-
O this is hallow morn he saidK
And it is your bridal dayH
But sad would be that gay weddingU
If bridegroom and bride were awayH
-
And ride on ride on proud MargaretK
Till the water comes o'er your breeC
For the bride maun ride deep and deeper yetK
Wha rides this ford wi' meC
-
Turn round turn round proud MargaretK
Turn ye round and look on meC
Thou hast killed a true knight under trustK
And his ghost now links on with theeC
