Come all you brave gallants and listen awhileA
With hey down down an a downB
That are in the bowers withinC
For of Robin Hood that archer goodD
A song I intend for to singE
-
Upon a time it chanced soF
Bold Robin in forrest did 'spyG
A jolly butcher with a bonny fine mareH
With his flesh to the market did hyeI
-
Good morrow good fellow said jolly RobinJ
What food hast thou tell unto meK
Thy trade to me tell and where thou dost dwellL
For I like well thy companyK
-
The butcher he answer'd jolly RobinJ
No matter where I dwellL
For a butcher I am and to NottinghamM
I am going my flesh to sellL
-
What's the price of thy flesh said jolly RobinJ
Come tell it soon unto meK
And the price of thy mare be she never so dearN
For a butcher fain would I beK
-
The price of my flesh the butcher repli'dO
I soon will tell unto theeK
With my bonny mare and they are not too dearN
Four mark thou must give unto meK
-
Four mark I will give thee saith jolly RobinJ
Four mark it shall be thy feeK
The mony come count and let me mountP
For a butcher I fain would beK
-
Now Robin he is to Nottingham goneQ
His butchers trade to beginC
With good intent to the sheriff he wentR
And there he took up his innC
-
When other butchers did open their meatS
Bold Robin he then begunJ
But how for to sell he knew not wellL
For a butcher he was but youngT
-
When other butchers no meat could sellL
Robin got both gold and feeK
For he sold more meat for one penyJ
Then others could do for threeK
-
But when he sold his meat so fastU
No butcher by him could thriveV
For he sold more meat for one penyJ
Than others could do for fiveV
-
Which made the butchers of NottinghamM
To study as they did standW
Saying Surely he 'is' some prodigalX
That hath sold his fathers landW
-
The butchers stepped to jolly RobinJ
Acquainted with him for to beK
Come brother one said we be all of one tradeY
Come will you go dine with meK
-
Accurst of his heart said jolly RobinJ
That a butcher doth denyJ
I will go with you my brethren trueZ
As fast as I can hieA2
-
But when to the sheriffs house they cameB2
To dinner they hied apaceC2
And Robin Hood he the man must beK
Before them all to say graceC2
-
Pray God bless us all said jolly RobinJ
And our meat within this placeC2
A cup of sack so good will nourish our bloodD2
And so do I end my graceC2
-
Come fill us more wine said jolly RobinJ
Let us be merry while we do stayE2
For wine and good cheer be it never so dearN
I vow I the reck'ning will payE2
-
Come 'brothers ' be merry said jolly RobinJ
Let us drink and never give oreF2
For the shot I will pay ere I go my wayE2
If it cost me five pounds and moreF2
-
This is a mad blade the butchers then saidG2
Saies the sheriff He is some prodigalX
That some land has sold for silver and goldH2
And now he doth mean to spend allI2
-
Hast thou any horn beasts the sheriff repli'dO
Good fellow to sell unto meK
Yes that I have good master sheriffJ2
I have hundreds two or threeK
-
And a hundred aker of good free landW
If you please it to seeK
And Ile make you as good assurance of itK2
As ever my father made meK
-
The sheriff he saddled his good palfreyK
And with three hundred pound in goldH2
Away he went with bold Robin HoodD
His horned beasts to beholdH2
-
Away then the sheriff and Robin did rideO
To the forrest of merry SherwoodD
Then the sheriff did say God bless us this dayE2
From a man they call Robin HoodD
-
But when a little farther they cameB2
Bold Robin he chanced to spyJ
A hundred head of good red deerN
Come tripping the sheriff full nighJ
-
How like you my horn'd beasts good master sheriffJ2
They be fat and fair for to seeK
I tell thee good fellow I would I were goneJ
For I like not thy companyK
-
Then Robin set his horn to his mouthL2
And blew but blasts threeK
Then quickly anon there came Little JohnJ
And all his companyK
-
What is your will master then said Little JohnJ
Good master come tell unto meK
I have brought hither the sheriff of NottinghamM
This day to dine with theeK
-
He is welcome to me then said Little JohnJ
I hope he will honestly payE2
I know he has gold if it be but well toldH2
Will serve us to drink a whole dayE2
-
Then Robin took his mantle from his backM2
And laid it upon the groundN2
And out of the sheriffs portmantleI2
He told three hundred poundN2
-
Then Robin he brought him thorow the woodD
And set him on his dapple grayE2
O have me commanded to your wife at homeO2
So Robin went laughing awayE2
