Melville And Coghill - The Place Of The Little Hand Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCAB DEDEDE FGHGHG

DEAD with their eyes to the foeA
Dead with the foe at their feetB
Under the sky laid lowA
Truly their slumber is sweetB
Though the wind from the Camp of theC
Slain Men blowA
And the rain on the wilderness beatB
-
Dead for they chose to dieD
When that wild race was runE
Dead for they would not flyD
Deeming their work undoneE
Nor cared to look on the face of the skyD
Nor loved the light of the sunE
-
Honor we give them and tearsF
And the flag they died to saveG
Rent from the raid of the spearsH
Wet from the war and the waveG
Shall waft men s thoughts through the dust of the yearsH
Back to their lonely graveG
