Some speak of lords some speak of lairdsA
And sic like men of high degreeB
Of a gentleman I sing a sangC
Some time call'd Laird of GilnockieC
-
The king he writes a loving letterD
With his ain hand sae tenderlieE
And he hath sent it to Johnnie ArmstrangC
To come and speak with him speedilieE
-
The Elliots and Armstrangs did conveneF
They were a gallant companieF
We'll ride and meet our lawful kingC
And bring him safe to GilnockieC
-
Make kinnen and capon ready thenF
And venison in great plentieG
We'll welcome here our royal kingC
I hope he'll dine at GilnockieC
-
They ran their horse on the Langholm howmH
And brake their spears with meikle mainF
The ladies lookit frae their loft windowsA
God bring our men weel hame againF
-
When Johnnie came before the kingC
With all his men sae brave to seeB
The king he moved his bonnet to himH
He ween'd he was a king as well as heB
-
May I find grace my sovereign liegeI
Grace for my loyal men and meB
For my name it is Johnnie ArmstrangC
And a subject of yours my liege said heB
-
Away away thou traitor strangC
Out of my sight soon may'st thou beB
I granted never a traitor's lifeJ
And now I'll not begin with theeB
-
Grant me my life my liege my kingC
And a bonnie gift I'll gi'e to theeB
Full four and twenty milk white steedsA
Were all foal'd in ae year to meB
-
I'll gi'e thee all these milk white steedsA
That prance and nicher at a spearK
And as meikle gude Inglish giltG
As four of their braid backs dow bearL
-
Away away thou traitor strangC
Out of my sight soon may'st thou beB
I granted never a traitor's lifeJ
And now I'll not begin with theeB
-
Grant me my life my liege my kingC
And a bonnie gift I'll gi'e to theeB
Gude four and twenty ganging millsA
That gang thro' all the year to meB
-
These four and twenty mills completeG
Shall gang for thee thro' all the yearK
And as meikle of gude red wheatG
As all their happers dow to bearL
-
Away away thou traitor strangC
Out of my sight soon may'st thou beB
I granted never a traitor's lifeJ
And now I'll not begin with theeB
-
Grant me my life my liege my kingC
And a great gift I'll gi'e to theeB
Bauld four and twenty sisters' sonsA
Shall for thee fecht tho' all shou'd fleeB
-
Away away thou traitor strangC
Out of my sight soon may'st thou beB
I granted never a traitor's lifeJ
And now I'll not begin with theeB
-
Grant me my life my liege my kingC
And a brave gift I'll gi'e to theeB
All between here and Newcastle townF
Shall pay their yearly rent to theeB
-
Away away thou traitor strangC
Out of my sight soon may'st thou beB
I granted never a traitor's lifeJ
And now I'll not begin with theeB
-
Ye lied ye lied now king he saysA
Altho' a king and prince ye beB
For I've loved naething in my lifeJ
I weel dare say it but honestieG
-
Save a fat horse and a fair womanF
Twa bonnie dogs to kill a deerK
But England shou'd have found me meal and maultG
Gif I had lived this hundred yearK
-
She shou'd have found me meal and maultG
And beef and mutton in all plentieG
But never a Scots wife cou'd have saidG
That e'er I skaith'd her a puir fleeB
-
To seek het water beneath cauld iceA
Surely it is a great follieB
I have ask'd grace at a graceless faceA
But there is nane for my men and meB
-
But had I kenn'd ere I came frae hameB
How unkind thou wou'dst been to meB
I wou'd ha'e keepit the Border sideG
In spite of all thy force and theeB
-
Wist England's king that I was ta'enF
Oh gin a blythe man he wou'd beB
For ance I slew his sister's sonF
And on his breast bane brak a treeB
-
John wore a girdle about his middleB
Embroider'd o'er with burning goldG
Bespangled with the same metalB
Maist beautiful was to beholdG
-
There hang nine targats at Johnnie's hatG
An ilk ane worth three hundred poundG
What wants that knave that a king shou'd haveM
But the sword of honour and the crownF
-
Oh where got thee these targats JohnnieB
That blink sae brawly aboon thy brieB
I gat them in the field fechtingC
Where cruel king thou durst not beB
-
Had I my horse and harness gudeG
And riding as I wont to beB
It shou'd have been tauld this hundred yearK
The meeting of my king and meB
-
God be with thee Kirsty my brotherD
Lang live thou laird of MangertounB
Lang may'st thou live on the Border sideG
Ere thou see thy brother ride up and downB
-
And God he with thee Kirsty my sonB
Where thou sits on thy nurse's kneeB
But an thou live this hundred yearK
Thy father's better thou'lt never beB
-
Farewell my bonnie Gilnock hallB
Where on Esk side thou standest stoutG
Gif I had lived but seven years mairL
I wou'd ha'e gilt thee round aboutG
-
John murder'd was at CarlinriggC
And all his gallant companieB
But Scotland's heart was ne'er sae waeN
To see sae mony brave men dieG
-
Because they saved their country dearK
Frae Englishmen Nane were sae bauldG
While Johnnie lived on the Border sideG
Nane of them durst come near his hauldG
