It fell about the MartinmasA
When the wind blew shrill and cauldB
Said Edom o' Gordon to his menC
We maun draw to a haldB
-
And whatna hald shall we draw toB
My merry men and meD
We will gae straight to Towie houseA
To see that fair ladyeE
-
The ladye stood on her castle wallF
Beheld baith dale and downG
There she was 'ware of a host of menC
Came riding towards the townG
-
Oh see ye not my merry men allF
Oh see ye not what I seeD
Methinks I see a host of menC
I marvel who they beD
-
She thought it had been her own wed lordB
As he came riding hameD
It was the traitor Edom o' GordonH
Wha reck'd nae sin nor shameD
-
She had nae sooner buskit hersel'F
And putten on her gownG
Till Edom o' Gordon and his menC
Were round about the townG
-
They had nae sooner supper setB
Nae sooner said the graceA
Till Edom o' Gordon and his menC
Were round about the placeA
-
The ladye ran to her tower headB
As fast as she cou'd hieI
To see if by her fair speechesA
She cou'd with him agreeD
-
As soon as he saw this ladye fairJ
And her yetts all lockit fastB
He fell into a rage of wrathK
And his heart was all aghastB
-
Come down to me ye ladye gayL
Come down come down to meD
This night ye shall lye within my armsA
The morn my bride shall beD
-
I winna come down ye false GordonH
I winna come down to theeD
I winna forsake my ain dear lordB
That is sae far frae meD
-
Gi'e up your house ye ladye fairJ
Gi'e up your house to meD
Or I shall burn yoursel' thereinM
Bot and your babies threeD
-
I winna gi'e up ye false GordonH
To nae sic traitor as theeD
Tho' you shou'd burn mysel' thereinM
Bot and my babies threeD
-
But fetch to me my pistoletteB
And charge to me my gunH
For but if I pierce that bluidy butcherN
My babes we will be undoneH
-
She stiffly stood on her castle wallF
And let the bullets fleeD
She miss'd that bluidy butcher's heartB
Tho' she slew other threeD
-
Set fire to the house quo' the false GordonH
Since better may nae beD
And I will burn hersel' thereinM
Bot and her babies threeD
-
Wae worth wae worth ye Jock my manO
I paid ye weel your feeD
Why pull ye out the grund wa' stanceA
Lets in the reek to meD
-
And e'en wae worth ye Jock my manO
I paid ye weel your hireN
Why pull ye out my grund wa' staneO
To me lets in the fireN
-
Ye paid me weel my hire ladyeE
Ye paid me weel my feeD
But now I'm Edom o' Gordon's manO
Maun either do or deeD
-
Oh then out spake her youngest sonO
Sat on the nurse's kneeD
Says Mither dear gi'e o'er this houseA
For the reek it smothers meD
-
I wou'd gi'e all my gold my bairnD
Sae wou'd I all my feeD
For ae blast of the westlin' windB
To blaw the reek frae theeD
-
But I winna gi'e up my house my dearP
To nae sic traitor as heD
Come weal come woe my jewels fairJ
Ye maun take share with meD
-
Oh then out spake her daughter dearP
She was baith jimp and smallF
Oh row me in a pair of sheetsA
And tow me o'er the wallF
-
They row'd her in a pair of sheetsA
And tow'd her o'er the wallF
But on the point of Gordon's spearP
She got a deadly fallF
-
Oh bonnie bonnie was her mouthQ
And cherry were her cheeksA
And clear clear was her yellow hairJ
Whereon the red bluid dreepsA
-
Then with his spear he turn'd her o'erN
Oh gin her face was wanD
He said You are the first that e'erN
I wish'd alive againD
-
He turn'd her o'er and o'er againD
Oh gin her skin was whiteB
I might ha'e spared that bonnie faceA
To ha'e been some man's delightB
-
Busk and boun my merry men allF
For ill dooms I do guessA
I canna look on that bonnie faceA
As it lyes on the grassA
-
Wha looks to freits my master dearP
Their freits will follow themD
Let it ne'er be said brave Edom o' GordonD
Was daunted with a dameD
-
But when the ladye saw the fireN
Come flaming o'er her headB
She wept and kissed her children twainD
Said Bairns we been but deadB
-
The Gordon then his bugle blewF
And said Away awayL
The house of Towie is all in a flameD
I hald it time to gaeR
-
Oh then he spied her ain dear lordB
As he came o'er the leaD
He saw his castle all in a flameD
As far as he could seeD
-
Then sair oh sair his mind misgaveD
And oh his heart was waeL
Put on put on my wighty menD
As fast as ye can gaeR
-
Put on put on my wighty menD
As fast as ye can drieN
For he that is hindmost of the thrangR
Shall ne'er get gude of meD
-
Then some they rade and some they ranD
Full fast out o'er the bentB
But ere the foremost could win upS
Baith ladye and babes were brentB
-
He wrang his hands he rent his hairN
And wept in tearful moodB
Ah traitors for this cruel deedB
Ye shall weep tears of bluidB
-
And after the Gordon he has ganeD
Sae fast as he might drieN
And soon in the Gordon's foul heart's bluidB
He's wroken his dear laydeB
-
And mony were the mudie menD
Lay gasping on the greenD
And mony were the fair ladyesD
Lay lemanless at hameD
-
And mony were the mudie menD
Lay gasping on the greenD
For of fifty men the Gordon brochtB
There were but five gaed hameD
-
And round and round the walls he wentB
Their ashes for to viewD
At last into the flames he flewD
And bade the world adieuD
