Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBA CDCDCDThe winter is upon us not the snow | A |
The hills are etched on the horizon bare | B |
The skies are iron grey a bitter air | B |
The meagre cloudlets shudder to and fro | A |
One yellow leaf the listless wind doth blow | A |
Like some strange butterfly unclassed and rare | B |
Your footsteps ring in frozen alleys where | B |
The black trees seem to shiver as you go | A |
- | |
Beyond lie church and steeple with their old | C |
And rusty vanes that rattle as they veer | D |
A sharper gust would shake them from their hold | C |
Yet up that path in summer of the year | D |
And past that melancholy pile we strolled | C |
To pluck wild strawberries with merry cheer | D |
