IN torrid heats of late JulyA
In March beneath the bitter biseB
He book hunts while the loungers flyA
He book hunts though December freezeC
In breeches baggy at the kneesC
And heedless of the public jeersD
For these for these he hoards his feesC
Aldines Bodonis ElzevirsC
-
No dismal stall escapes his eyeA
He turns o er tomes of low degreesC
There soiled romanticists may lieA
Or Restoration comediesC
Each tract that flutters in the breezeC
For him is charged with hopes and fearsC
In mouldy novels fancy seesC
Aldines Bodonis ElzevirsC
-
With restless eyes that peer and spyA
Sad eyes that heed not skies nor treesC
In dismal nooks he loves to pryA
Whose motto evermore is SpesC
But ah the fabled treasure fleesC
Grown rarer with the fleeting yearsC
In rich men s shelves they take their easeC
Aldines Bodonis ElzevirsC
-
ENVOYE
-
Prince all the things that tease and pleaseC
Fame hope wealth kisses cheers and tearsC
What are they but such toys as theseC
Aldines Bodonis ElzevirsC
