Ballade Of The Dead Cities Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBC ABABBCBC ABABBCB D ACAC

The dust of Carthage and the dustA
Of Babel on the desert woldB
The loves of Corinth and the lustA
Orchomenos increased with goldB
The town of Jason over boldB
And Cherson smitten in her primeC
What are they but a dream half toldB
Where are the cities of old timeC
-
In towns that were a kingdom's trustA
In dim Atlantic forests' foldB
The marble wasteth to a crustA
The granite crumbles into mouldB
O'er these left nameless from of oldB
As over Shinar's brick and slimeC
One vast forgetfulness is roll'dB
Where are the cities of old timeC
-
The lapse of ages and the rustA
The fire the frost the waters coldB
Efface the evil and the justA
From Thebes that Eriphyle soldB
To drown'd Caer Is whose sweet bells toll'dB
Beneath the wave a dreamy chimeC
That echo'd from the mountain holdB
'Where are the cities of old time '-
-
ENVOYD
-
Prince all thy towns and cities mustA
Decay as these till all their crimeC
And mirth and wealth and toil are thrustA
Where are the cities of old timeC
