Ballade Of Middle Age Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBBBB ABABBBBB ABABBBBB C BBBB

Our youth began with tears and sighsA
With seeking what we could not findB
Our verses all were threnodiesA
In elegiacs still we whinedB
Our ears were deaf our eyes were blindB
We sought and knew not what we soughtB
We marvel now we look behindB
Life's more amusing than we thoughtB
-
Oh foolish youth untimely wiseA
Oh phantoms of the sickly mindB
What not content with seas and skiesA
With rainy clouds and southern windB
With common cares and faces kindB
With pains and joys each morning broughtB
Ah old and worn and tired we findB
Life's more amusing than we thoughtB
-
Though youth turns spectre thin and diesA
To mourn for youth we're not inclinedB
We set our souls on salmon fliesA
We whistle where we once repinedB
Confound the woes of human kindB
By Heaven we're well deceived I wotB
Who hum contented or resignedB
Life's more amusing than we thoughtB
-
ENVOYC
-
O nate mecum worn and linedB
Our faces show but THAT is naughtB
Our hearts are young 'neath wrinkled rindB
Life's more amusing than we thoughtB
