Annan water's wading deep | B |
And my love Annie's wondrous bonny | C |
And I am laith she suld weet her feet | D |
Because I love her best of ony | C |
- | |
Gar saddle me the bonny black | E |
Gar saddle sune and make him ready | C |
For I will down the Gatehope Slack | E |
And all to see my bonny ladye | F |
- | |
He has loupen on the bonny black | E |
He stirr'd him wi' the spur right sairly | G |
But or he wan the Gatehope Slack | E |
I think the steed was wae and weary | C |
- | |
He has loupen on the bonny gray | H |
He rade the right gate and the ready | C |
I trow he would neither stint nor stay | H |
For he was seeking his bonny ladye | F |
- | |
O he has ridden o'er field and fell | G |
Through muir and moss and mony a mire | I |
His spurs o' steel were sair to bide | J |
And fra her fore feet flew the fire | K |
- | |
Now bonny grey now play your part | L |
Gin ye be the steed that wins my deary | C |
Wi' corn and hay ye'se be fed for aye | F |
And never spur sall make you wearie | C |
- | |
The gray was a mare and a right good mare | C |
But when she wan the Annan water | C |
She couldna hae ridden a furlong mair | C |
Had a thousand merks been wadded at her | C |
- | |
O boatman boatman put off your boat | M |
Put off your boat for gowden monie | C |
I cross the drumly stream the night | N |
Or never mair I see my honey | C |
- | |
O I was sworn sae late yestreen | C |
And not by ae aith but by many | C |
And for a' the gowd in fair Scotland | O |
I dare na take ye through to Annie | C |
- | |
The side was stey and the bottom deep | B |
Frae bank to brae the water pouring | P |
And the bonny grey mare did sweat for fear | C |
For she heard the water kelpy roaring | P |
- | |
O he has pou'd aff his dapperpy coat | M |
The silver buttons glanced bonny | C |
The waistcoat bursted aff his breast | Q |
He was sae full of melancholy | C |
- | |
He has ta'en the ford at that stream tail | G |
I wot he swam both strong and steady | C |
But the stream was broad and his strength did fail | G |
And he never saw his bonny ladye | F |
- | |
O wae betide the frush saugh wand | R |
And wae betide the bush of brier | C |
It brake into my true love's hand | S |
When his strength did fail and his limbs did tire | C |
- | |
And wae betide ye Annan water | C |
This night that ye are a drumlie river | C |
For over thee I'll build a bridge | T |
That ye never more true love may sever | C |
