Aesop Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED F FG BDBD HIHI JKJK LML NBNB

He sat among the woods he heardA
The sylvan merriment he sawB
The pranks of butterfly and birdA
The humours of the ape the dawB
-
And in the lion or the frogC
In all the life of moor and fenD
In ass and peacock stork and dogE
He read similitudes of menD
-
'Of these from those ' he cried 'we comeF
Our hearts our brains descend from these '-
And lo the Beasts no more were dumbF
But answered out of brakes and treesG
-
'Not ours ' they cried 'DegenerateB
If ours at all ' they cried againD
'Ye fools who war with God and FateB
Who strive and toil strange race of menD
-
'For WE are neither bond nor freeH
For WE have neither slaves nor kingsI
But near to Nature's heart are weH
And conscious of her secret thingsI
-
'Content are we to fall asleepJ
And well content to wake no moreK
We do not laugh we do not weepJ
Nor look behind us and beforeK
-
'But were there cause for moan or mirthL
'Tis WE not you should sigh or scornM
Oh latest children of the EarthL
Most childish children Earth has borne '-
-
-
-
They spoke but that misshapen slaveN
Told never of the thing he heardB
And unto men their portraits gaveN
In likenesses of beast and birdB
