Pennoyer Governor of OregonA
Casting to South his eye across the bourneB
Of his dominion where the PalmipedC
With leathers 'twixt his toes paddles his marshD
Amphibious saw a rising cloud of hatsE
And heard a faint far sound of distant cheersF
Below the swell of the horizon 'Lo 'G
Cried one 'the President the President 'G
All footed webwise then took up the wordC
The hill tribes and the tribes lacustrine andC
The folk riparian and littoralH
Cried with one voice 'The President He comes 'G
And some there were who flung their headgear upI
In emulation of the Southern mobJ
While some more soberly disposed stood stillK
And silently had fits and others madeC
Such reverent genuflexions as they couldC
Having that climate in their bones Then spakeL
The Court Dunce humbly as became him 'SireM
If thou as heretofore thou hast wilt deignN
To reap advantage of a fool's adviceO
By action ordered after nature's wayP
As in thy people manifest for stillK
Stupidity's the only wisdom thouQ
Wilt get thee straight unto to the border landC
To mark the President's approach with suchR
Due decent courtesy as it shall seemS
We have in custom the best warrant for 'G
-
Pennoyer Governor of OregonA
Eyeing the storm of hats which darkened allT
The Southern sky and hearing far hurrahsO
Of an exulting people answered notC
Then some there were who fell upon their kneesO
And some upon their Governor and soughtC
Each in his way by blandishment or forceO
To gain his action to their end 'Behold '-
They said 'thy brother Governor to SouthU
Met him even at the gateway of his realmV
Crook kneed magnetic handed and agrinA
Backed like a rainbow all things done in formW
Of due observance and respect Shall weX
Alone of all his servitors refuseO
Swift welcome to our master and our lord '-
-
Pennoyer Governor of OregonA
Answered them not but turned his back to themY
And as if speaking to himself the whileZ
He started to retire said 'He be damned '-
-
To that High Place o'er Portland's central blockA2
Where the Recording Angel stands to viewB2
The sinning world nor thinks to move his feetC
Aside and look below came flocking upI
Inferior angels all aghast and criedC
'Pennoyer Governor of OregonA
Has said O what an awful word too badC
To be by us repeated ' 'Yes I know '-
Said the superior bird 'I heard it tooB2
And have already booked it Pray observe '-
Splitting the giant tome whose covers fellC2
Apart o'ershadowing to right and leftC
The Eastern and the Western world he showedC
The newly written entry black and bigD2
Upon the credit side of thine accountC
Pennoyer Governor of OregonA
