Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGG HIJJKKL MMHER hair was beautifully white | A |
Beneath her bonnet black as night | A |
Which plainly of New England kin | B |
Was tied with strings beneath her chin | B |
And when she spoke I had no choice | C |
But listened to that soft crisp voice | C |
And when she smiled I saw the truth | D |
She had been lovely in her youth | D |
And with those quick observing eyes | E |
Was charming still to all the wise | E |
And still in spite of bonnet strings | F |
She thought keen quaint amusing things | F |
With gaiety that many hold | G |
Remarkable in one so old | G |
- | |
We talked ten minutes in a train | H |
And when we came to part again | I |
Good bye enjoy yourself ' said she | J |
I told her that ahead of me | J |
No pleasure beckoned no I said | K |
Stern duty only lay ahead | K |
Oh well ' her parting answer ran | L |
Enjoy yourself the best you can ' | - |
And so unconquerably gay | M |
She went upon her darkening way | M |
