Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGG HIJJKKL MM

HER hair was beautifully whiteA
Beneath her bonnet black as nightA
Which plainly of New England kinB
Was tied with strings beneath her chinB
And when she spoke I had no choiceC
But listened to that soft crisp voiceC
And when she smiled I saw the truthD
She had been lovely in her youthD
And with those quick observing eyesE
Was charming still to all the wiseE
And still in spite of bonnet stringsF
She thought keen quaint amusing thingsF
With gaiety that many holdG
Remarkable in one so oldG
-
We talked ten minutes in a trainH
And when we came to part againI
Good bye enjoy yourself ' said sheJ
I told her that ahead of meJ
No pleasure beckoned no I saidK
Stern duty only lay aheadK
Oh well ' her parting answer ranL
Enjoy yourself the best you can '-
And so unconquerably gayM
She went upon her darkening wayM
